A leading advanced engineering manufacturer is seeking an experienced Machine Shop Manager to oversee a high-performing CNC machining operation. The Role
Reporting into senior leadership, the Machine Shop Manager will take full responsibility for the performance of a busy machining facility operating across multiple shifts. The role will involve managing production, engineering support functions, operational performance, and team development, while driving improvements in productivity, quality, and manufacturing efficiency.
This is a hands-on leadership position requiring strong technical knowledge, people management skills, and the ability to support both day-to-day operations and long-term manufacturing strategy.
Key Responsibilities
• Oversee the daily running of a large CNC machining department operating a range of multi-axis machine tools
• Lead, develop, and support production supervisors, engineers, and machining personnel
• Ensure production targets are achieved safely, efficiently, and in line with customer delivery requirements
• Drive improvements in machine utilisation, workflow efficiency, and overall operational performance
• Work closely with manufacturing engineering teams to improve machining methods, tooling strategies, and production processes
• Monitor manufacturing output, labour utilisation, downtime, and production costs
• Support capacity planning and scheduling activities to ensure smooth workflow across the department
• Identify and implement continuous improvement initiatives throughout manufacturing
• Review manufacturing issues and support root cause analysis and corrective actions
• Support the introduction of new equipment, technology, and manufacturing processes
• Maintain high standards of quality, housekeeping, and workplace organisation
• Assist with recruitment, training, mentoring, and workforce development
• Conduct performance reviews, manage attendance, and support employee development plans
• Work closely with other departments including Planning, Quality, Purchasing, and Engineering to support wider business objectives
• Prepare operational reports and performance updates for senior management
The Candidate
Apprentice trained or qualified within mechanical/manufacturing engineering
Proven experience managing CNC machining operations within a precision engineering or advanced manufacturing environment
Strong technical understanding of machining processes including milling, turning, and EDM operations
Experience managing production teams within a fast-paced manufacturing environment
Good understanding of manufacturing performance metrics, production planning, and continuous improvement
Strong leadership, communication, and organisational skills
Ability to motivate teams and drive operational improvements
Commercial awareness with the ability to balance quality, cost, and delivery objectives
Confident problem solver with a proactive and hands-on management style
Comfortable working with ERP/MRP systems and Microsoft Office applications
