Position
Consultant Ophthalmologist – Paediatric Ophthalmology (Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Leighton Hospital, Crewe)
Key responsibilities
* Provide 6.5 programmed activities per week, including 5 primary appointments (PA) for Direct Clinical Care and 1.25 Supporting Professional Activities (SPA).
* Deliver comprehensive ophthalmology services, including both general and paediatric subspecialty care.
* Participate fully in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
* Promote Clinical Governance and participate in clinical audit and research activities.
* Supervise and support clinical staff, including trainees, nurses, and allied health professionals.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* Full GMC Registration with license to practice.
* MBBS and FRCophth or equivalent.
* Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via CCT (within 6 months of interview), CESR or European Community Rights.
Desirable qualifications
* PhD, MD or other high degree.
Experience – Essential
* Clinical training and breadth of experience equivalent to UK CCT Ophthalmology.
* Extensive experience in paediatric ophthalmology, including surgical management of paediatric strabismus and leading the Retinopathy of Prematurity screening service.
* Ability to offer expert clinical opinion and independent management on a wide range of problems, both emergency and elective.
* Demonstrated competency in all areas of ophthalmology for consultant level practice.
* Commitment to effective departmental management and awareness of service management issues.
Experience – Desirable
* Recognised fellowship training in Paediatric Ophthalmology.
* Experience in managing adult oculo‑motility disorders, running outpatient clinics and performing surgical intervention.
Abilites – Essential
* Proven ability to conduct clinical and operative ophthalmology across all areas.
* Demonstrates leadership and organisational skills, leading teams by positive example.
* Strong communication skills with staff at all levels and patients.
* Commitment to clinical risk management and governance.
* Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems.
Abilities – Desirable
* Understanding of business planning and contracting.
* Proven experience in leading or facilitating change processes.
Audit and Research – Essential
* Proven involvement in clinical audit.
* Track record of ophthalmology research with evidence of publications.
Audit and Research – Desirable
* Publication record in subspecialty area of interest.
Teaching and Education – Essential
* Evidence of accreditation as a Consultant Clinical Supervisor for trainee doctors with the GMC.
Teaching and Education – Desirable
* Evidence of accreditation as a Consultant Educational Supervisor for trainee doctors with the GMC.
Other – Essential
* Ability to communicate effectively with staff and patients.
* Commitment to clinical risk management and governance.
* Solid team‑working skills and ability to establish good working relationships with multidisciplinary teams.
* Flexible, adaptable to competing demands and committed to modern practices.
* Good skills in applying research outcomes to clinical problems.
