Controls Service Engineer – Midlands / Remote - £55,000
GS Solutions is currently partnered with an automation house who are looking for a Controls Service Engineer to join their team on a permanent basis.
Circa £55,000 + £4,800 car allowance / work van
Location: Telford/Nottingham/Remote from home when on call on a shift pattern basis.
Role Overview
We are seeking a skilled Controls Service Engineer to join our service team, providing technical support and field service for industrial control systems. This role is purely service-based, involving both remote troubleshooting and on-site fault resolution. The successful candidate will play a key role in maintaining customer satisfaction through timely, professional, and effective support.
You will take part in a fortnightly out-of-hours support rota.
-When on Rota, you will be required to responding to customer calls and system issues. Initial diagnosis and support will be provided via remote access, with site attendance required if the issue cannot be resolved remotely.
-When not on Rota, you will be required to carry out service visits, PPM works (planned preventative maintenance) and also training on current ongoing projects which will be handed to the service department in due course.
Key Responsibilities
-Provide technical support to customers for control system faults and breakdowns via phone, email, or remote connection.
-Diagnose and resolve PLC, HMI, and automation-related issues on Siemens systems (TIA Portal) and SEW Hardware.
-Attend customer sites to carry out corrective maintenance when issues cannot be resolved remotely.
-Maintain detailed service reports, documenting actions taken, findings, and recommendations.
-Ensure compliance with all relevant safety standards and company policies during site visits.
-Support the continuous improvement of control systems through feedback to engineering and design teams.
-Maintain tools, test equipment, and software licenses in accordance with company procedures.
Required Skills and Experience
-Proficiency with Siemens TIA Portal (S7 PLCs, HMIs, and related systems).
-Strong knowledge and experience with industrial electrical installations, including panel wiring and fault finding.
-Experience with remote diagnostics and field service work in an industrial or manufacturing environment.
-Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings and schematics.
-Excellent troubleshooting and analytical skills.
-Strong customer service and communication abilities.
Desirable Skills
-Familiarity with other automation platforms (e.g., Allen-Bradley, Mitsubishi, or Schneider).
-Knowledge of SEW Movimot Units and the use of SEW Movisuite (training can be provided if needed)
-Experience with SCADA systems, industrial networking, and barcode readers.
-Knowledge of safety systems and functional safety principles.
