Job Summary
This role is offered on a full or part time basis to support the busy Radiology Department at Great Western Hospital in Swindon and the CDC in West Swindon. The role provides an opportunity to be part of an experienced team, develop your skills and provide high‑quality care to patients.
The Radiology department includes 2 interventional rooms, 2 fluoroscopy rooms, 7 general X‑ray rooms, 5 ultrasound rooms, 3 diagnostic CT scanners, 2 MRI scanners and a nursing recovery bay.
Main duties of the job
A Senior Health Care Support Worker (SHCSW) for Radiology is a core member of the team delivering direct care to patients and supporting registered practitioners. The post holder will assist doctors, radiographers and radiology nursing staff, undertake delegated tasks, and teach and supervise junior staff without line‑management responsibility.
Job responsibilities
* Obtain consent prior to giving care in accordance with Trust policies.
* Complete duties delegated to you in line with care plans.
* Use your knowledge, experience and understanding to take decisions within your area of responsibility.
* Carry out a range of clinical duties with minimal/no supervision, including preparation and positioning of patients prior to examination, assistance and recovery of biopsy patients, taking EGFR samples, bladder flow measurements, peripheral intravenous cannulation, decanting, blood pressure monitoring, oxygen saturation levels, body temperature, pulse rate, respiration rate, glucose monitoring, collection and testing of urine, faecal, sputum samples and wound swabs.
* Participate in patient assessment providing high‑quality holistic patient care and escalating concerns to other clinical staff.
* Practice safe standards of care to patients following Trust guidelines and infection prevention and health & safety policies.

Qualifications
Essential
* Completion of care certificate
* Completion of Level 3 Diploma in Healthcare Support (maps to the Apprenticeship Standard for Senior Health Care Support Worker)
* Level 2 Functional Skills in English and Maths or equivalent
* BTEC National Diploma
* Level 3 (SCQF‑6): City & Guilds 3
Desirable
* Cannulation competency
Experience
Essential
* In‑depth experience in a care / health role
* Current knowledge of developments in healthcare
* Observations training
* Working within a multi‑disciplinary team
Desirable
* Previous experience working in an X‑ray department / clinical environment within the NHS
* Previous experience of inserting / removing peripheral intravenous cannula
