Lead Tooling Innovation from Concept to Full Production
An established precision engineering business in Cheltenham is seeking an experienced Tool Development Engineer to lead the development and optimisation of complex tooling solutions within a high-precision manufacturing environment.
This is a pivotal technical role responsible for taking tooling projects from concept design through validation and into full-rate production, ensuring performance, manufacturability, and quality standards are consistently achieved.
You will collaborate closely with clients, engineering, and production teams, providing technical leadership and driving continuous improvement across tooling development.
The Role
Lead the development of press tools and fixtures using advanced CAD software (including CATIA V5)
Manage tooling projects from initial concept through design validation and production release
Interpret customer technical requirements and provide expert engineering solutions
Optimise tooling for manufacturability, cost-efficiency, durability and performance
Support tooling trials, validation processes and full-rate production introduction
Produce detailed technical drawings and maintain structured documentation
Create process instructions for new tooling implementation
Ensure compliance with ISO and quality management standards
Provide technical support to production during tooling introduction and ramp-up
Contribute to continuous improvement and engineering innovation initiatives
Mentor and support junior engineers where required
Requirements
Proven experience within tooling development or tool design in a precision engineering environment
Strong CAD capability (CATIA V5 essential)
Solid understanding of forming processes, including Hydraulic and Hydroforming Presses
Strong knowledge of manufacturing and production processes
Experience introducing new tooling into production environments
Excellent problem-solving skills with high attention to detail
Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines
Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills
