An exciting contract vacancy has arisen for a highly accomplished and experienced herdsperson to take on the care of an organic herd in West Dorset near Crewkerne.
The herd comprises 350 predominately autumn calved cows with a small spring block, which are milked through a 20:40 GEA parlour with ACR's, meters, auto ID & Seg, and auto wash. The unit, built 10 years ago, includes housing in cubicles allied to a well thought out handling system. Yield is around 8,800 litres per cow, with milk supplied to Yeo Valley.
We require someone with a proven track record of caring for a herd of this size who can lead milkings, as well as working with other farm staff. Alongside milking, the role will comprise being proactive with herd health, doing AI, foot trimming, calving, night checks on a rota as well as working closely with the vet. You will also be responsible for record keeping and be involved in grass measuring & management.
The unit is remote yet easily accessible with shops and schools nearby. The rewards for this very important role in a stunning part of the south-west will include a generous salary, regular time off and a very nice 3-bedroom house a short walk from the unit, which will be provided free from rent, rates and council tax.
