The Position
This role provides the successful candidate with extensive experience in all aspects of grid engineering as it is applied to zero carbon energy projects, from inception to energisation. The Graduate Grid Engineer will be based on a hybrid basis at one of our offices: Gateshead, Kings Langley, Glasgow or Larne.
Responsibilities
* Conduct grid feasibility assessments of new development projects.
* Analyse and present network data sets for project teams to support decision‑making.
* Prepare cost estimates for project substation and interconnection.
* Manage grid connection liabilities and advise on liability risk.
* Prepare technical appendices of Grid Applications, including Single Line Diagrams and fault calculations.
* Support project senior grid engineers delivering grid connections of construction projects, including reviewing Grid Code and G99 technical requirements, contributing to 33kV‑400kV substation layouts, and participating in Grid Code/G99 testing.
* Provide input to grid connection feasibility studies for new sites and support new site search activities.
* Help identify optimum grid connection solutions, considering capacity headroom, system charging, and grid constraints.
* Support securing grid connection agreements (or modifications) aligned with project strategy.
* Track grid liabilities and advise on connection agreement strategies to manage risk exposure.
* Engage with procurement colleagues to capture robust information on grid connection costs and substation equipment and update internal tools.
* Support Grid Engineers in delivering grid compliance to enable timely energisation and operation of projects.
* Provide support to operating projects through the Support Services team for third‑party project adoption.
* Provide grid input into public consultations published by key industry stakeholders such as OFGEM, NESO, DESNZ and grid licensee companies.
Knowledge
* Distinction in Electrical Power System Analysis or equivalent module.
* Basic understanding of engineering aspects of grid connection.
* Basic understanding of the electricity market structure in the UK and Ireland.
Skills
* Ability to learn and apply that learning within grid connection construction and grid regulation frameworks.
* Ability to complete technical tasks to the required quality and agreed timescales.
* Effective communication skills, including presentation, to both technical and non‑technical audiences – written and verbal.
* Attention to detail during preparation and review of key grid inputs.
Experience
* Some relevant work experience.
* Experience gained within electrical engineering or a grid‑related discipline is preferable.
Qualifications
* Degree, HND or HNC in Electrical Engineering or a related subject.
Reporting and Development
Reporting to a Project Manager but supported by the Energy Networks Team, the Graduate Grid Engineer will provide support to UK&I colleagues on grid engineering, commercial, regulatory and charging matters. RES offers a leading onboarding and training plan designed to equip graduates with the skills and competency needed to achieve IET Chartered status. The successful candidate will be given the opportunity to learn from seasoned Grid Engineers as part of a personal development plan, with the aim of progressing into a full Grid Engineer role within one of the project delivery teams.
