Since opening in 1934, Brookfield Zoo has connected the Chicagoland area with nature and wildlife through its diverse animal collection and landscape featuring native and nonnative trees. Recognized internationally for animal care and conservation, the 235-acre zoo also offers guests a chance to enjoy over 100 tree species. It is a Level II accredited arboretum in the Morton Register of Arboreta.
This position contributes to the success of Brookfield Zoo Chicago ("BZC") by performing routine Grounds Department duties to enhance the park's beauty and guest experience. The Sr. Groundskeeper role focuses on the care and maintenance of native and nonnative trees, requiring arboriculture knowledge and a Certified Arborist license. A valid Class "B" CDL driver's license with airbrake endorsements is also required.
The schedule is typically Sunday through Thursday, 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., with flexibility as needed. This is a union, full-time position (grade U530) with an hourly rate of $31.14.
Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities
Perform landscape maintenance, horticulture, and general park duties, including waste disposal, snow plowing, equipment maintenance, irrigation system work, and safety inspections. Lead and train other staff, develop procedures, and participate in departmental activities. Conduct daily inspections and report safety or repair issues.
Position Requirements
* High school diploma or GED
* At least 3 years of grounds or horticulture experience
* Knowledge of irrigation systems and pesticide licensing may be required
* Certified Arborist license preferred
* Good communication skills and a customer service orientation
* Valid driver’s license; CDL license may be required
Desirable Qualifications
* Associate's degree in Horticulture or related field, or equivalent experience
* Multilingual skills, especially Spanish

Employees must demonstrate proficiency in using various tools and equipment safely. The role involves working cooperatively, maintaining professionalism, and supporting BZC's mission and values. A physical exam may be required to assess ability to perform essential functions.
