Job Introduction
East Durham College is seeking a dedicated and skilled Animal Management Technician to support our outstanding animal unit and contribute to the delivery of an ambitious curriculum. This is a hands-on role ideal for someone passionate about animal care and education.
Key Responsibilities:
* Provide daily care, feeding, and enrichment for a diverse animal collection.
* Monitor animal health and welfare, supporting student learning opportunities.
* Assist with veterinary care and transport animals when needed.
* Prepare the unit for practical teaching sessions and support learners during husbandry activities.
* Maintain enclosures and equipment, ensuring a safe and clean environment.
* Supervise work experience students and contribute to staff training.
* Represent the department at internal and external events.
* Maintain records, manage stock, and support curriculum delivery.
Essential Criteria:
* Level 3 qualification in animal management with strong practical skills.
* GCSEs (or equivalent) in Maths and English.
* Significant experience working with a range of animals including mammals and reptiles.
* Experience maintaining safe working environments and completing risk assessments.
* Experience working with young people and delivering animal demonstrations.
* Strong animal handling skills.
* Good organisational and record-keeping abilities.
* Ability to inspire and communicate effectively with learners.
* Flexible and adaptable to weekend and holiday work.
* Professional integrity and commitment to safeguarding and equality.
Desirable Criteria:
* Level 3 qualification in supporting teaching and learning (or willingness to work towards).
* First Aid qualification (or willingness to achieve).
* Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
* Full UK Driving Licence and/or access to a vehicle.
