Our client is lifestyle and entertainment publication. The magazine has both a print edition and a strong digital presence, with their online offering real-time updates, video content, and lifestyle coverage (fashion, beauty, celebrity news etc.) With a focus on credible reporting, they reach millions through its magazine, website, and social platforms.
The magazine is seeking an experienced, sharp, highly-motivated and organised Deputy Editor. The ideal candidate will be passionate about celebrity, lifestyle and fashion news, be bursting with agenda-setting feature ideas, interviews, shoots and covers. You will have an impressive track record of landing exclusives, a keen eye for visually-stunning layouts, able to tell stories through photos and a flair for editing under pressure and within tight time constraints.
As Deputy Editor, you will oversee the features department and their output, manage the features editor and deputy features editor to produce high-quality cover stories and features ensuring it aligns with the magazine’s tone, style, and values and be up to date on law for journalism
Key Responsibilities:
* Assist the Editor with the editorial planning, production, and execution of the magazine from a features angle
* Cover for the Editor when they are away
* Line manager for the Features and Deputy Editor and work closely with them, overseeing the features agenda for the week in the magazine
* Manage the daily content workflow, ensuring articles are produced on time and meet editorial standards.
* To oversee Trello: ensure daily deadlines are put on Trello every day
* Edit copy on a daily basis of articles as assigned by the editor
* To ensure art and picture desks are briefed on their deadlines and set daily priorities to writers, art and picture desks
* Experienced in working with an art desk on layouts
* To approve layouts as assigned by the editor
* To read Finals before the editor and re-write headlines if they are not appropriate
* Improve upon magazine’s authority and competitive standing in the weekly market through news contacts and exclusive news stories
* Develop fresh angles on trending stories to stand out in a competitive media landscape
* Monitor analytics to guide content strategy and increase audience engagement.
* Strong, provable, existing relationships with the relevant celebs, PRs, publicists, agents and other industry contacts
* Bring in at least two cover story ideas a month which fits the brand
* Regularly meet with the relevant PRs on a weekly basis
* Regular weekly attendance at entertainment industry events
* Proven track record of breaking exclusive stories which appeal to the audience
* Forward plan covers, around key events
* Coordinate with writers, the picture desk and other contributors to oversee assigned articles, interviews, and features
* Work to a fast and tight-turnaround and ensure writers are delivering their news article at speed and accurately
Editorial Leadership and Support:
* Ensuring smooth operation of the editorial department.
* Provide support to the Editor in planning and executing the editorial strategy.
* Assist in managing the editorial calendar, ensuring timely delivery of content
Content Management:
* Brief and commission articles, features, and other content from both in-house and freelance writers.
* Collaborate closely with teams to ensure cohesive and engaging content.
* Edit and proofread copy to maintain the magazine's high editorial standards.
