Placing in Schools Appeal Committee
City Wide

The City of Edinburgh Council is seeking independent members to join the Placing in Schools Appeal Committee.

Applications are welcomed from:

* Parents/carers of children of school age attending a school in the City of Edinburgh area; and
* Persons with experience in education, and/or acquainted with educational conditions in the Council’s area

The Appeal Committee considers appeals against decisions of the Council to turn down requests for places in schools or to exclude pupils from school. The role of the Appeal Committee is to decide whether the Council (as the education authority) has made the correct legal decision to refuse placing requests or to exclude pupils. The Committee may also consider the individual circumstances of each case and decide whether to grant or refuse appeals. Information is provided to members in the form of reports, written supporting statements and evidence, and verbal submissions at meetings.

This is a voluntary position, and reasonable expenses will be reimbursed. Full training will be provided. Meetings will take place between 9.30am and 5pm Mondays to Thursdays, online via Teams or in person at the City Chambers, High Street, Edinburgh. Successful applicants will be subject to a PVG check before appointments are ratified.

This post is regulated work with children and/or protected adults under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007. The preferred candidate will be required to join the PVG Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme update check. Where an individual has spent a continuous period of 3 months or more out with the UK in the last 5 years, an Overseas Criminal Record Check will be required. You will be required to provide this check. An unconditional offer of employment and commencement in the post will be subject to the outcome of both these pre-employment checks being deemed satisfactory
