We are seeking a dedicated and reliable Pharmacy Technician to join our healthcare team within the HMP Chelmsford prison. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to the delivery of pharmaceutical services in a secure and structured environment, supporting the prison healthcare team, managing medication administration, and ensuring effective pharmaceutical service delivery.

Working pattern: 40 hours per week, spread over four days (7:00 AM – 6:00 PM), following a rolling schedule over an eight‑week period. The pattern will vary each week and include weekend coverage. Part‑time options may also be considered.


Main Responsibilities

* Work as an effective member of the Pharmacy team in providing healthcare services, including medication administration to patients.
* Assist in delivering a high‑quality pharmacy service, providing medicines‑management services to tackle identified inequalities within the prison.
* Provide pharmacy‑related information to patients, prison officers and other healthcare professionals, ensuring advice is appropriate to need.
* Operate autonomously within your scope of competency while supporting less experienced staff.
* Assist in implementing and developing pharmacy support for all residential wings, advising patients on correct medication use where appropriate.
* Maintain clear, comprehensive, signed and contemporaneous records, both written and electronic.
* Recognise signs and symptoms of drug and alcohol withdrawal, support patients with substance misuse problems, and assist those distressed or at risk of harming themselves or others, including suicide risk.
* Communicate effectively with other team members, prison staff and external agencies, both verbally and in writing.
* Undertake all mandatory and additional training as identified.
* Use and encourage others to be familiar with the security systems within the prison.
* Undertake all duties required of a Pharmaceutical Professional in HMP Chelmsford and comply with the competencies, knowledge and skills framework of the Department of Health.


Person Specification

* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
* Ability to build and develop relationships.
* Confidence and capability to practice autonomously and work independently.


Essential Experience & Qualifications

* Qualified with an NVQ Level 3, BTEC or equivalent.
* Registered Pharmacy Technician with current General Pharmaceutical Council membership.
* All candidates are subject to prison vetting checks.
* Ability to work effectively as part of a multi‑professional team within a fast‑paced environment.


Desirable Experience

* Experience in a prison environment.
* Experience working as part of a multi‑disciplinary team.
