Genomic tools, EvoMG-DN seeks to establish EvoMG as a structured and impactful discipline in Europe. The network aims to train the next generation of interdisciplinary researchers to unlock the full potential of evolutionary genomic approaches in healthcare. The consortium includes 22 participating organisations, and the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR), London, UK is one of the partners. The PhD studentship for this project will be funded via HORIZON-MSCA-2024-DN-01 award. The student will work on the project "New strategies for exploiting the fitness costs of drug resistance in cancer" under the guidance of Prof. Trevor Graham at the ICR. Project Aims
 * Barcode a panel of cancer cell lines to enable genetic lineage tracing
 * Design a large-scale experimental screen in which clinically relevant drugs are applied to barcoded cancer cell lines, generating resistant clones in vitro
 * Use single cell DNA sequencing to track genetic lineages through treatment and resistance, and single cell RNA sequencing to characterise the resistant phenotype
 * Apply mathematical frameworks to learn the dynamics of resistance evolution
 * Combine experimental results with computational modelling of evolutionary dynamics to propose new therapeutic strategies for adaptive intervention
Research Field
Mathematics & Computational mathematics Education Level Bachelor Degree or equivalent.
Skills & Qualifications
 * BSc (First or 2:1) or Master's degree, ideally in a quantitative subject (physics, mathematics, computer science) but experience in cell or molecular biology is highly valued.
 * Strong interest in experimental cancer biology essential; prior wet-lab training not essential.
 * Experience with computational or mathematical modelling valuable.
 * Highly motivated candidate with willingness to learn and enthusiasm for tackling complex questions in evolutionary dynamics.
 * Strong interest in how resistance evolves and can be managed is essential.
Eligibility
 * Applicants must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the UK for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before their recruitment date.
 * Languages: ENGLISH.
 * Only applicants who satisfy the following MSCA mobility rule are eligible to apply.
Salary & Benefits
 * The candidate will receive a monthly salary of Euros 4,917 (subject to tax and National Insurance deductions), which includes both a living allowance and a mobility allowance, for a duration of 36 months.
 * Family allowance: if having a family, eligible for a monthly family allowance of Euros 380 (subject to tax and National Insurance deductions), provided they meet the eligibility criteria for the MSCA family allowance.
