One of the UK's leading day and boarding schools based in Surrey is looking to recruit a Head of Finance on a permanent basis.
Role Overview
To assist the Director of Finance and Operations (DFO) in the financial management of the School and to lead and oversee its financial functions, including subsidiary companies and the Foundation. This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to the management and leadership of the School during an exciting period of strategic development. The Head of Finance will lead the Finance Department, which includes the Senior Finance Officer, Billing Officer, and Finance Assistant (Purchasing and Payroll).
Responsibilities
* Reporting to the DFO, play a hands-on role in maintaining a robust financial control environment and ensuring efficient processes.
* Implement change to achieve best practices throughout the school.
* Lead and manage the school’s Finance team, overseeing daily operations, communication, motivation, succession planning, and performance management.
* Ensure regular performance reviews and professional development for team members.
* Advise on the optimal structure and resources for the Department.
* Support the DFO in preparing annual budgets, working with budget holders, and leading departmental budget setting.
* Collaborate with the DFO and Director of Estates on financing and budgeting for maintenance and building projects.
* Support budget management and spend analysis for budget holders.
* Assist in implementing the School's strategic financial objectives.
* Ensure financial systems and controls are effective.
* Prepare monthly management accounts, including performance analysis and forecasts.
* Contribute to the Governors' Resources Committee.
* Develop long-term forecasts, sensitivity analyses, and feasibility studies.
* Conduct competitor analysis and benchmarking.
* Maintain professional development and stay updated on regulatory changes.
* Identify and promote value-for-money improvements.
* Analyze financing options for major capital projects.
Candidate Profile
* Experience leading a finance team.
* Calm, positive, and measured under pressure.
* Decisive with sound judgment.
* Effective leadership and management skills.
* Ability to communicate financial matters to non-specialists.
* ACA, ACCA, or CIMA qualified.
* In-depth knowledge of FRS102, annual accounts preparation, and audit processes.
* Good understanding of VAT and corporation tax.
* Experience in schools or charity sectors preferred.
* Knowledge of Charities SORP.
