The role
2 months contract with a Local Authority Job Description – Grounds Maintenance / HWRC Site Operative Job Purpose To carry out all aspects of practical amenity horticulture and site maintenance to a high standard, ensuring grounds and facilities meet Grounds Maintenance Specifications and client expectations. The role also includes supporting operations at the Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC), including maintaining cleanliness and advising residents on recycling practices. Key Responsibilities Grounds Maintenance & Horticulture Duties Grass cutting, strimming, hedge trimming, and clearing leaves/litter Planting bedding plants, trees, and shrubs Shrub bed maintenance including pruning and division Carrying out soft landscaping tasks (top-soiling, seeding, cultivation, etc.) Maintenance and marking of sports facilities Safe application of chemicals in line with regulations HWRC Site Duties Carry out general cleaning duties across the site Monitor resident activity and provide guidance on correct recycling procedures Assist in maintaining a safe, clean, and efficient recycling environment General Responsibilities Operate vehicles, machinery, and plant equipment safely and efficiently Ensure all equipment is well-maintained and report any defects Comply with Health & Safety at Work regulations and report hazards or incidents Work independently and as part of a team to meet service standards and deadlines Maintain a flexible approach to duties, including working outdoors in all weather conditions Support colleagues and contribute to a positive team environment Experience Proven experience in grounds maintenance, horticulture, or similar outdoor roles (minimum 2 years preferred) Experience operating horticultural machinery (e.g. mowers, strimmers) Experience in soft landscaping and general site maintenance Experience in customer-facing roles (desirable for HWRC duties) Qualifications Essential NVQ Level 1 in Horticulture (or equivalent) OR relevant practical experience Understanding of Health & Safety regulations Desirable PA1/PA6 spraying certificate Knowledge of plant identification and plant care Basic mechanical knowledge of plant and machinery Skills & Attributes Ability to work independently with minimum supervision Able to work to deadlines Good communication skills (oral and written) Reliable, punctual, and flexible approach Physically fit and able to work outdoors in all weather conditions Positive attitude and willingness to learn new skills Team player with a proactive and supportive approach Additional Information Full, valid UK driving licence essential Pay Rate: £16.57 per hour (Limited/Umbrella) Working Pattern: Monday to Sunday (rota basis) Shift Duration: 10 hours per day · Location: Docks Way, Newport, NP20 2NS, United Kingdom Working Hours: 37 hours per week (averaged over a two-week period) Staff members will be required to carry out cleaning duties and advise/monitor residents on recycling procedures at the HWRC site We operate on a bi-weekly payment schedule.
