Overview
Job Description. Reporting to: Commercial Director. As Head of Commercial, you will contribute to our commercial strategy and be responsible for managing the sales team, developing new business opportunities and ensuring that the agreed financial targets are met to achieve profitable and sustainable business growth.
Responsibilities
* Strategic Leadership: You’ll take the lead in implementing our commercial strategy, ensuring it supports our overall business objectives and sets us up for long term success. Maintaining a focus on identifying where we can grow, whether that’s expanding our market share, reaching new customers or entering new markets.
* Market Analysis: Keeping a close eye on the numbers and trends that matter to the business and maintaining accurate data on our total addressable market and the opportunities within it. Using this data, including potential threats and future market trends, to help the senior team make informed decisions about our future.
* Sales and Marketing Oversight and Team Management: You’ll lead and support our sales and marketing teams, setting clear objectives and ensuring that our strategies are effectively executed. Regular customer reviews and a focus on results will also be required to fulfil this role successfully.
* Business Development and Deal Negotiation: As Head of Commercial, you will be at the forefront of developing new business, identifying opportunities and building strong relationships with clients, partners and industry leaders. You’ll guide and support the team in the negotiation and closing of high-value awards.
* Financial Management: Working closely with our finance team, you’ll help set financial targets and shape budgets and forecasts. As well as monitoring commercial performance using key metrics and KPIs for sustainability and profitability.
* Reporting and Analysis: Monitoring and reporting on performance metrics, preparing comprehensive reports on commercial activities and providing strategic recommendations to senior management.
Key Skills
* Strategic Thinking & Commercial Acumen: Holding a deep understanding of how businesses grow and succeed, from shaping strategy to delivering results. Experience in our sector is desirable, but not essential.
* Analytical Mindset: You’ll be comfortable working with data and using it to guide your decisions, whether that’s analysing market data, financial reports or performance metrics.
* Leadership: We are looking for you to lead by example, inspiring confidence and energy in those around you. Your approach will bring out the best in your teams and help them stay focused, motivated and clear on what success looks like.
* Negotiation: Expertise and confidence in negotiating complex, high-value contracts and securing outcomes that drive sustainable growth.
* Interpersonal Skills: A natural communicator who can connect with people across all levels, both inside and outside of the business. Strong relationships are central to how we work and we’re looking for you to help nurture them as part of your day to day.
What you will need to succeed
We’re looking for at least 5 year’s experience in a commercial or business development role, ideally within the heavy lift, transport, construction or a closely related sector.
You’ll be a self-starter, someone who’s proactive, confident and comfortable taking ownership. Skilled in sales contract negotiation, pipeline management and leading a team, you’ll know how to build strong relationships with key customers and senior stakeholders.
With a sharp commercial mind and a collaborative approach, you’ll combine analytical insight with clear communication. You’ll work closely with the wider leadership team and play a key part in securing new contracts and driving our growth.
