Starting as Medical Secretary / Practice Administrator, progressing to Practice Manager
Manchester Plastic Surgery (MPS) is seeking a motivated and professional individual who ultimately wants to become our Practice Manager. This role begins in a hands-on Medical Secretary / Practice Administrator position so that you can learn our systems, patient pathways and culture from the ground up. Over time, you will transition into the full Practice Manager role as part of a planned and supported succession.
We are offering a starting salary that already reflects this long-term trajectory. While you will begin with administrative responsibilities, the intention from day one is that you will grow steadily into the leadership and operational management of the practice.
About the Role
This is a rare opportunity to be deliberately trained into the senior role that will run the practice in the future. You will initially support daily operations while gaining a detailed understanding of how a boutique private surgical service functions.
As you develop, you will gradually assume responsibility for operational oversight, HR administration, supplier management, governance and the wider coordination of the practice.
You are not simply stepping into a secretary role — you are stepping into a structured pathway toward becoming the Practice Manager.
Initial Responsibilities (Medical Secretary / Practice Administrator)
* Managing patient communication (phone, email, written correspondence)
* Scheduling consultations, imaging, follow-ups and theatre lists
* Preparing quotes, invoices and supporting clinical documentation
* Ordering implants, garments, dressings and clinical consumables
* Liaising with hospitals, suppliers and accounts teams
* Supporting governance, data handling and record accuracy
* Contributing to the smooth running of clinics and patient pathways
Progression Responsibilities (Practice Manager Pathway)
Over the first 1–3 years, with full mentorship, you will start to take on:
* Oversight of daily practice operations
* Staff coordination and HR administration
* Supplier relationships, stock and financial workflows
* Compliance, audit and governance processes
* Systems improvement and patient-experience optimisation
* Responsibility for practice performance and development
* Acting as the primary operational lead for the practice
The pace of progression will depend on your experience and readiness, but the expectation is that you will ultimately take over the Practice Manager post.
What We’re Looking For
* Experience in medical, surgical or practice administration (NHS or private)
* Organised, detail-oriented and comfortable taking ownership
* Warm, professional communication with patients and colleagues
* Mature, reliable and able to work independently within a small team
* An interest in leadership, operations, and improving systems
* Someone who wants a long-term role with true career advancement
* A calm and steady presence capable of supporting a high-quality service
Salary & Development
* Starting salary: £35,000
* Progression to: £45,000 as you assume practice management responsibilities
* Full support and structured development from the current Practice Manager and Consultant Surgeon
* A long-term opportunity to take on a senior leadership role within an established private practice
