This role will deliver two key studies:

* D1: Stack Monitoring Feasibility Study
* D2: In‑House Stack Monitoring Capability Study

Key Responsibilities

* Conduct a comprehensive review of historical stack monitoring data, including tritium, radiological, and beryllium measurements.
* Analyse operational trends and bubbler water contamination patterns; assess impact on measurement accuracy.
* Evaluate Safety Case requirements and compliance obligations (i.e. Best Available Techniques (BAT) Assessments) for stack emissions.
* Define data requirements for Environment Agency (EA) submissions and ensure regulatory alignment.
* Audit existing stack monitoring processes.
* Assess feasibility of developing in‑house stack monitoring capability.
* Prepare detailed reports with recommendations that ensure adherence to UK regulations (EPR, IRR17, Beryllium (COSHH)), EA guidance, and ALARA principles.
* Incorporate radiological and hazardous material safety considerations (tritium, beryllium) into all assessments.
* Maintain robust risk management and contamination control measures.
* Liaise with internal stakeholders (Health Physics, Safety, Environmental, Operations).
* Communicate findings and recommendations clearly to senior management and technical committees.
* Produce high‑quality technical reports and supporting documentation.
* Apply QA/QC standards to all data analysis and reporting activities.

Degree‑level Education

* Environmental Engineering
* Chemical Engineering
* Environmental Science or Air Quality Management

Relevant Certifications

* MCERTS (UK) for stack emissions testing, or emissions monitoring.
* Radiation Protection Supervisor (RPS) or equivalent ISO 17025 awareness for analytical labs.

Safety Training

* Radiological safety and ALARA principles (Desirable but not essential)
* Handling beryllium (Be) and toxic metals
* PPE and contamination control

Radiological Principles

* Tritium behaviour in gaseous and water vapor forms
* Decay, dispersion, and dose modelling

Beryllium Hazards

* Toxicology, occupational exposure limits, and monitoring techniques

Regulatory Frameworks

* IRR17
* EPR
* COMAH (Control of Major Accident Hazards regulations)

Monitoring Technologies

* Tritium monitors (ionization chambers, proportional counters)
* Beryllium sampling and lab analysis

Environmental Impact Assessment

* Radiological dispersion modelling
* Stack emission modelling for hazardous substances

Experience

* Data analysis and reporting: Interpreting emission data, QA/QC procedures, uncertainty analysis.
* Stack sampling and monitoring: Manual and CEMS techniques for conventional pollutants.
* Radiological monitoring: Tritium sampling (HT, HTO) in air and stack emissions.
* Use of liquid scintillation counters, ion chambers, and tritium monitors.
* Hazardous material handling: Beryllium sampling and analysis.
* Data interpretation: Radiological dose assessment and emission factor development for radioactive and toxic substances.
