Role Summary
As an Assistant Psychologist at HMP Portland you will support and enhance the professional psychological care of offenders within the service. Responsibilities include providing psychological assessment and interventions under the supervision of a qualified psychologist, working autonomously according to agreed plans, and supporting clinical administration, audits, research projects, and teaching.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide psychological therapy services to service users residing in HMP Portland, including individual and group therapies.
* Deliver assessments and interventions using psychological theory, including neuro‑psychological tests, self‑report measures, rating scales, structured observations, and semi‑structured interviews.
* Assist in the formulation and delivery of care plans, under the supervision of a qualified psychologist.
* Coordinate and run therapeutic groups or clinical projects.
* Collaborate with other staff to assess or support service users and contribute to multidisciplinary discussions or care guidelines.
* Support the development of a psychological‑based framework of understanding and care across all service settings.
* Assist in the design and implementation of audit and research projects; collect, analyse, and report data using IT and statistical programmes.
* Assist in creating visual or user‑friendly information for interventions with clients.
* Participate in regular clinical supervision and contribute to training and support of other staff in psychological care.
Management Responsibilities
* Assist in designing and implementing service development projects.
* Attend meetings to discuss planned service developments.
Clinical Responsibilities
* Conduct psychological assessments applying theory and various assessment tools.
* Formulate and deliver care plans in the prison setting.
* Coordinate therapeutic groups or clinical projects.
* Support multidisciplinary group discussions and care guideline development.
* Contribute to a psychological framework of understanding for all service settings.
Research Responsibilities
* Assist in design and implementation of audit and research projects.
* Collect, analyse, and produce reports and summaries using IT and statistical programmes.
* Create graphs or charts to summarise data on interventions or treatment programmes.
* Produce user‑friendly information for client interventions.
Communication Responsibilities
* Receive regular clinical supervision in line with professional practice guidelines.
* Gain wider experience of professional psychology within the NHS.
* Develop skills and competencies to assist in current duties.
* Contribute to training and support of other staff in psychological care.
