A permanent opportunity has arisen on Kahlo ward, a female acute ward with 19 beds, providing a safe and supportive environment for patients aged 18‑65 who are experiencing an acute episode of mental health illness and may be at high risk of harm to themselves or others.


Ward and Service Overview

Kahlo ward serves residents of Havering, Waltham Forest, Redbridge, and B&D and is part of a Trust that offers a wide range of mental health inpatient services including older adult, learning disabilities, psychiatric intensive care, low secure services and young people.


Key Responsibilities

* Demonstrate proactive, able, and responsive nursing leadership, both clinically and in team management.
* Coordinate shifts, share knowledge, and guide nursing staff to safely manage patient needs.
* Provide meaningful and robust supervision, mentorship and preceptorship, and enrol in annual appraisals.
* Act as a leader and role model to the nursing team on a shift basis under the guidance of the Ward Manager.
* Complete clinical audit and contribute to governance processes.
* Deputise for the Ward Manager, chair meetings and undertake management roles.
* Manage the ward's HR systems, including staffing, sickness, performance issues, and annual leave reporting.
* Provide clinical and safeguarding supervision upon completion of training.
* Complete a 5‑day Prevention and Management of Violence and Aggression course, updating yearly.
* Work shifts over a 365‑day year, including night duty.
* Assess client needs and support nurses in formulating individual, holistic care plans.
* Communicate effectively with relatives and carers of service users.
* Maintain IT documentation accuracy and support young people's care.
* Take steps to maintain the safety and welfare of staff, patients and the ward.


Qualifications & Experience

* Minimum one year as a registered nurse, preferably within CAMHS and/or crisis setting.
* Inpatient experience, ideally on an acute ward.
* Thorough knowledge of care planning and risk assessment.
* Knowledge of legislation: Mental Capacity Act 2005, Mental Health Act 1983 (2007), CQC and NMC requirements.
* Ability to work all shifts, including night duty.


Additional Requirements

* High‑cost area supplement of 15% of basic salary (minimum £4,551, maximum £5,735, pro‑rata for part time).
* Commitment to the prevention of violence and aggression and its implementation in practice.
* Compliance with the Trust’s induction programme and probationary period.


Induction & Probation

New starters join on the first Monday of each month and undertake a comprehensive induction of up to two weeks at the Trust’s head office in Rainham, Essex, including mandatory training and systems orientation.

The post is subject to a probationary period (internal applicants are exempt unless already in probation).

* Access to comprehensive training programmes, including physical health, personality disorders, and safeguarding courses.
* Participation in Nationally recognised initiatives such as the acute care pathway, Open Dialogue, and BME Network.
