Offer description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated senior trainee (ST4 or above or equivalent) with an interest in leadership, management, and quality improvement to join Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust as a chief registrar on the RCP Chief Registrar Programme.

The medical chief registrar will be attached to the Division of Medicine and Integrated Care (MIC), which operates Trust-wide, and the acute medicine team at St Mary’s Hospital. Responsibilities include contributing to the medical take, care of medical inpatients, and same-day emergency care (SDEC).

The chief registrar will have 40% protected time to develop skills and confidence in leadership, management, and quality improvement. Projects will be tri-site within MIC and may extend to other divisions, including service improvement, engagement and morale, workforce wellbeing, and sustainability.

Chief registrars benefit from access to a bespoke development programme provided by the RCP, running from September 2025 to June 2026, comprising five 2-day modules that post holders are expected to attend.

The duration of the post is initially 1 year, with the possibility of extension.

This post is 60% clinical within the Department of Acute Medicine at St Mary’s and 40% managerial within the MIC division.

The Medical Division Chief Registrar will work with the Divisional Director of Medicine and the Head of Operations for the Medical Division on various projects, including:

* Providing a bridge between senior clinical leaders, managers, and the wider trainee workforce to improve communication, engagement, and morale
* Involvement in workforce planning and improving the deployment of trainees to meet service needs and enhance morale
* Service improvement projects to enhance patient flow and safety within acute medicine
* Developing and maintaining up-to-date project documentation and producing periodic progress reports

The chief registrar will also attend departmental, divisional management, and executive meetings to understand the infrastructure and operation of the Trust and how broader social, political, and economic factors influence healthcare delivery.

At Imperial College Healthcare, you can achieve extraordinary things with extraordinary people, working alongside leading clinicians pushing boundaries in patient care. Become part of a vibrant team that embodies our values: expert, kind, collaborative, and aspirational. You’ll gain unique experience and accelerate your career. Benefits include career development, flexible working, wellbeing initiatives, staff recognition schemes, and optional benefits such as Cycle to Work, car lease schemes, season ticket loans, or onsite leisure memberships.

The statutory requirement to be fully Covid-19 vaccinated as a condition of employment from April 2022 is subject to legislative review. We strongly encourage vaccination, as it remains the best defense against COVID-19. The successful candidate may have contact with patients and service users; as part of pre-employment checks, we will ask about vaccination status or medical exemptions.

Due to ongoing Covid-19 measures, most interviews are conducted virtually.

We are committed to equal opportunities and improving staff working lives. We welcome applications for flexible, part-time, or job-share arrangements. Please discuss this during the interview process.
