Overview
A permanent opportunity on Kahlo ward, a 19-bedded female acute ward, for a Deputy Ward Manager. The ward serves patients aged 18‑65 from Havering, Waltham Forest, Redbridge, and B&D who are experiencing an acute episode of mental health illness and may be high risk of harm.
Responsibilities
* Lead the nursing team on shift, coordinating shifts, sharing knowledge and guiding staff to provide safe care for the client group.
* Provide clinical audit and contribute to governance processes.
* Deputise for the Ward Manager in their absence, chairing meetings and undertaking management roles.
* Manage HR systems of the Ward: staffing, sickness, performance issues, annual leave reporting.
* Provide clinical and safeguarding supervision, mentor junior staff and students.
* Attend 5 days of Prevention and Management of Violence and Aggression course yearly.
* Work shifts over a 365‑day year, including night duty.
* Assess client needs and support nurses in formulating appropriate individual care plans.
* Ensure relatives and carers can communicate effectively with the clinical area.
* Maintain accurate documentation and communication around caring for young people.
* Take steps to maintain safety and welfare of staff, patients and the ward.
Qualifications
* Registered Nurse with at least one year experience working as a Nurse in a CAMHS and/or crisis setting.
* Inpatient experience; desirable previous work in an acute inpatient ward.
* Knowledge of care planning and risk assessment for acutely unwell people.
* Good working knowledge of legislation (Mental Capacity Act 2005, Mental Health Act 1983 (2007)) and CQC and NMC requirements.
* Ability to work all shifts, including night duty.
* Strong leadership and team‑working skills.
* Competence in IT skills for accurate documentation.
Benefits
High‑Cost Area Supplement of 15 % of basic salary (minimum £4,551, maximum £5,735, pro‑rata for part time staff). The position also offers comprehensive induction and training, and a probationary period (internal applicants exempt). The post holder will work with a supportive multi‑disciplinary team.
