Caretaker Hours of duty: 5 hours weekly – 1 hour each day term time (7.30 – 8.30) Actual Salary: £3,084.97 per annum term time only plus 5 TED days Accountable to: Headteacher and Governing Board in respect of all professional duties. Your work will be managed by the Headteacher who is your first point of contact for any school related issues. Should you be unable to fulfil your duties of Caretaker on any occasion, you must inform the Headteacher of your absence and the reasons for it at the earliest opportunity. Where an absence is deemed avoidable this may be classed as unpaid leave. Core responsibility To maintain a clean, attractive, secure and welcoming site through a process of regular cleaning and routine/ scheduled maintenance of buildings, grounds, fixtures and fittings, thereby ensuring the safety and welfare of all children, staff and visitors within the school and its grounds. Responsibilities You are responsible for overseeing the work of the cleaner. You are also responsible for ensuring that the school is secure when unoccupied, that all rooms are clean and tidy in readiness for the start of each school day, that routine maintenance is carried out and for informing the Headteacher or member of the SLT (Senior Leadership Team) of any health, safety or maintenance issue that you are aware of. The following is a description of your duties. You should at all times have due regard to your health and safety when undertaking any tasks. You should report any concerns, accidents or incidents to the Headteacher/SLT immediately. When working alone in the building you should ensure that your own safety is protected by securing the building to prevent intruders and ensuring that another adult is aware that you are working alone and how to contact you should you be later than expected in returning from work. You should not carry out any tasks which place your safety at risk, e.g. climbing ladders unless you are suitably trained and accompanied by another adult. Duties as Caretaker: Cleaning Monitor the cleaner’s regular deep cleans of the whole school Carry out emergency cleaning duties, such as gritting and cleaning up spillages To arrange with the school administrator the booking of the window cleaner once a year to clean the windows. Security To unlock the school in the morning and ensure the cleaner locks up at the end of the day. Lock and unlock the premises as required, including out of school hours when necessary Caretaker or cleaner: To ensure that all windows and doors are closed, all lights are switched off and the alarm set before leaving the premises. To attend to the alarm should it sound out of school hours and report the sounding of the alarm and subsequent actions to the Headteacher/SLT member. Advise the headteacher on all matters relating to school security and safety To report any instances of unauthorised visitors on the premises, vandalism, damage to school property and items requiring maintenance to the Headteacher/SLT at the earliest opportunity. Health and safety Ensure a safe working and learning environment in accordance with relevant legislation Provide safe access to the school in cold weather conditions Carry out and record regular health and safety checks, including on fire alarm, legionella risk, play equipment, safety equipment, ladders etc and any hazards on school premises; report any problems to headteacher. See breakdown in appendix See Caretaker checks doc & folders/TIO system for recording To check the grounds and outside of the building each day. To clear all paths of litter, twigs and other debris before school each day. To put out the wheelie bins each week for collection. To check cleaner is emptying litter bins and child monitors are picking up litter in the grounds once a week. To re-arrange furniture as requested by the Headteacher/SLT e.g. for meetings To carry out routine repair jobs not requiring specialist services, e.g. monitoring and adjusting time clocks, small repairs, fixing blinds etc. Responsibilities Be committed to the safeguarding and promotion of the welfare of children and young people Comply with the policies and procedures relating to child protection, health and safety, security, confidentiality and data protection, and equal opportunities, and report all concerns to an appropriate person Take appropriate action to identify, evaluate and minimise any risks to health, safety and security in the school working environment Contribute to the overall ethos/work/aims of the school Establish constructive relationships and communication with all staff and other agencies/professionals Recognise own strengths and areas of expertise and use these to advise and support others Participate in training and other learning activities and performance development as required Ensure that cleaning staff carry out their duties professionally and effectively Ensure that safe working practices are followed in respect of COSHH and other Risk Assessment control measures.
