About Anthony Nolan
Each day, Anthony Nolan matches incredible individuals willing to donate their stem cells to those who desperately need a lifesaving transplant. It all began in 1974 when Shirley Nolan's three-year-old son, Anthony, was in urgent need of a bone marrow transplant. Shirley set up the world's first donor register to find a match, and with it, the Anthony Nolan charity. Since then, Anthony Nolan has been leading the way in helping people across the world who need stem cell transplants, and, right now, giving four people every day a second chance at life.
Every year, Anthony Nolan facilitates around 1,100 UK and 300 international stem cell transplants. However, a global shortage of cell collection facilities has led to growing delays, with only 1 in 5 UK-aligned donors in 2022-23 able to donate on the requested date. To help tackle the shortage, Anthony Nolan has opened a dedicated Cell Collection Centre in Nottingham, increasing timely access to donations and easing pressure on the NHS. This means more donations can happen on the right day, which can be critical for patients awaiting treatment.
