Based in the Head office of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ), located in Central London, the National Organiser (Broadcasting) will lead the department handling broadcasting members within the union.
Job Description
Reporting to the NUJ General Secretary, this role will have primary industrial responsibility for:
* Maintaining continuous liaison with and gathering information from the union’s broadcasting members, both collectively and individually, through meetings, conferences, forums, emails, social media, etc.
* Recruiting and retaining broadcasting journalists across the union.
* Planning and tailoring recruitment strategies, working with lay reps and activists to establish and organize chapels in consultation with the Broadcasting Industrial Council (BIC) and other organizations.
* Negotiating collective agreements, pay claims, and representing the interests of broadcasting members in cooperation with other organizers.
* Organizing and coordinating advice and information services to individual members, including telephone advice, routine information circulation, and support with representation and negotiations where necessary.
* Providing detailed written reports on industrial and workplace issues to the union's National Executive Council (NEC).
* Servicing the union’s elected Broadcasting Industrial Council (BIC) and other committees, councils, or group chapels as directed by the General Secretary. The National Organiser should identify issues facing members and develop strategies and responses, attending meetings as needed.
* Lobbying and campaigning on key policy issues affecting broadcasting journalists in both private and public sectors.
* Liaising with other NUJ sectors, Scottish, Irish, and Northern offices, and with other media unions and organizations on relevant issues.
* Adhering to all NUJ policies, especially those related to equality and ethics.
* Undertaking additional duties as directed by the General Secretary or the Assistant General Secretary in their absence.
Managerial Responsibilities
* Line managing BBC secondees and ensuring effective support across London and the Nations and Regions.
* Overseeing broadcasting membership expenses in accordance with NUJ policies, with oversight from the Head of Finance & Membership.
Training Responsibilities
* Facilitating and tailoring trade union training for broadcasting members through the union’s central training program.
Person Specification
The successful candidate will be educated to degree level and/or have at least five years of trade union experience. The role requires flexibility, including some travel, and the following skills:
* Experience and knowledge of the current media industry and issues faced by broadcasting workers.
* Strong organizational and negotiating skills, preferably within a trade union context, with experience working with employer organizations.
* Proven ability to develop and implement recruitment and organizing strategies.
* Experience servicing meetings within a committee structure.
* Research skills and documentation preparation.
* Ability to handle collective and individual issues sympathetically and efficiently, representing workers effectively.
* Excellent communication skills using both traditional and electronic means.
* Familiarity with media technologies used by members.
* Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
* Self-motivated and flexible to respond to urgent issues.
* Understanding of equal opportunities legislation and practices.
* Ability to motivate staff and work harmoniously within a team.
