1. Being aware of the purpose of the Nursery and understanding the role of a Nursery Manager within it. This involves the understanding that the work of the Nursery is with the parents of the children who attend as well as the child.
2. Assisting the nursery Manager in ensuring that base rooms are kept in a safe hygienic, clean and stimulating condition for children (this includes any kitchens and shared areas, e.g. toilets, sleep rooms) and reporting any hazards, defects, or necessary repairs to Nursery Manager.
3. Ensuring that children are clean, comfortable and treated with respect at all times within routines relevant to their age and stage of development
4. Ensuring that children are supervised, particularly during outdoor or physical play.
5. Assisting the Nursery Manager in ensuring the implementation of the curriculum designed for the purpose of fulfilling the functions of the nursery, including helping Nursery Manager to devise and participate in activities designed to fulfil these functions.
6. Assisting the nursery Manager in working with representative of other agencies and professionals in implementing programmes within the nursery that may be recommended by them and encouraging parents to participate in these programmes where necessary.
7. Assisting the nursery Manager in being aware of children's home circumstances or any changes in other relevant circumstances –for example any information passed on by parent and ensuing appropriate action.
8. Understanding the importance of written records in a nursery and assisting the nursery Manager in keeping a daily written record of each child who is under supervision during the day and on longer term, basis child assessment and observation records. Reporting any concerns re assessments to Nursery Manager.
9. Caring for and respecting equipment and informing nursery Manager whenever repair, replacement or other necessary attention is required.
10. Being aware of, and working within the setting's policies and procedures .
11. Administering first aid as appropriate (if properly qualified).
12. Preparation of snacks for children (if properly qualified).
13. Participating in training courses provided by the nursery and other courses on a day release or short-term basis.
14. Responsible for supervising, advising and providing guidance to nursery assistants and students. Delegating as appropriate.
15. Providing safe, creative appropriate play opportunities, preparing activities, organising the play program and accommodation.
16. Assisting the Nursery Manager/Deputy Manager in the performance of the duties relating to the requirements of the setting.
17. Any other duty which may from time to time be designated as the responsibility of a Nursery Nurse.
