Consultant Geriatrician – Orthogeriatrics
Consultant Geriatrician with an interest in Orthogeriatrics. Barts Health NHS Trust is looking for two full‑time consultants to join our Older People’s Services (OPS) team, based mainly at Whipps Cross Hospital.
Job Summary
These posts offer an exciting opportunity to develop new models of working and services that support all older people attending the hospital and the local community. Whipps Cross Hospital serves a population with a high degree of frailty and is being developed into a centre for Geriatric medicine.
Job Responsibilities
As part of the development of Whipps Cross as a centre for frailty, the hospital became a centre of excellence for fragility fracture care in 2021, expanding the workforce to revolutionise care for orthopaedic patients with fragility fractures. The post offers a unique opportunity to participate in the redevelopment of the hospital and its services, and to build new care pathways that provide gold‑standard care to frail elderly patients.
Applicants must hold full registration with the General Medical Council and be on the Specialist Registrar or within 6 months of obtaining CCST.
Person Specification
Essential Qualifications
* Must be on the GMC specialist register for Geriatric Medicine or within six months of CCT
* CESR route acceptable
* Full GMC registration with licence to practice
Desirable Qualifications
* Evidence of participation in research (peer‑reviewed publications, etc.)
* Appropriate higher degree (e.g., MD, PhD or equivalent)
Essential Experience
* Higher specialist training in Geriatrics and G(I)Medicine
* Broad experience in Geriatrics and G(I)M
* Current ALS certificate
Desirable Experience
* Ability to organise and deliver a teaching programme
* Experience in service development
Essential Knowledge
* Detailed knowledge of Geriatrics and G(I)M and of the specialist skills required for this post
* Knowledge of multidisciplinary clinical audit and demonstrable commitment to improving quality of care to patients
* Understanding of modern medical curricula and commitment to life‑long learning
Essential Skills
* Ability to work as part of a multi‑disciplinary team
* Experience of supervising medical staff
* Ability to teach medical students and junior medical and nursing staff
* Effective communication with colleagues, patients, relatives, GPs, nurses and other agencies
