Job overview

We are delighted to advertise positions within the Safeguarding Children Team (full & part time).

The post holder will be a key member of the Safeguarding Children Team and work closely with the Head of Safeguarding Children and Named Professionals in delivering the Safeguarding Children Strategy and associated work and audit plans for the Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (HHFT).

The postholder will work across both community and acute settings, with a typical split of 3 days within the Community and 2 days from the hospital site This may be adjusted in response to service needs.

Main duties of the job

Paediatric liaison work will involve working with the paediatric liaison health visitor to communicate effectively between primary, secondary and tertiary health, social care and education services by following up all children and young people (0-18) who attend

Emergency Department (ED) or are seen in/outpatients services particularly when there are safeguarding concerns.

Safeguarding training and supervision work will be provided to named groups of staff in line with HHFT learning and development strategy and the safeguarding children supervision policy. The post holder will be expected to identify and provide evidence based specialist information, advice, guidance and support required to help staff practise safely to safeguard children confidently and effectively.

The post holder will work with the Named Professionals to ensure that lessons learnt from audit and serious case reviews/case management reviews/significant case reviews are disseminated to staff and embedded to improve clinical practice.

Person specification

Education / Qualifications

Essential criteria

1. Current registration on part 1 of the NMC register as a registered children’s nurse or Part 3 as a specialist community public health nurse (health visitor or school nurse)
2. First level degree or equivalent in a health related subject.
3. •Educated to master level or equilvent experience via work experience or short courses
4. Completed an accredited Supervisors Skills course

Desirable criteria

5. Completed post registration training in safeguarding children and young people or willing to do so

Skills/ Abilities

Essential criteria

6. Contribute to, and make considered judgements about how to act to safeguard/protect a child or young person
7. Work with children, young people and families where there are safeguarding concerns as part of the multi-disciplinary team and with other disciplines,
8. Present safeguarding/child protection concerns verbally and in writing for professional and legal purposes
9. Give effective feedback to colleagues and take appropriate action
10. Challenge other professionals when required and provide supporting evidence take appropriate action
11. Deliver training and provide support and safeguarding supervision to colleagues and peers
12. Contribute to and make considered decisions on whether concerns can be addressed by providing or signposting to sources of information or advice
13. Participate and chair multi-disciplinary meetings as required
14. Contribute to risk assessments
15. Prepare chronologies and reviews that summarise and interpret information about •individual children and young people from a range of sources
16. Assess the role the impact of parental issues on children, young people, and the family,
17. Lead on or participate in audits •assurance processes
18. Good understanding of IT systems such as searching and retrieving data
19. Ability to use Microsoft packages.

Knowledge

Essential criteria

20. Knowledge/understanding of confidentiality issues
21. Sound Knowledge of Safeguarding Children statutory and local threshold framework, policies and procedures
22. Knowledge/understanding of information sharing and confidentiality issues
23. Understand the importance of children’s rights in the safeguarding/child protection context, and related legislation
24. Recognises the impact of a family’s cultural and religious background when assessing risk to a child or young person, and managing concerns
25. Understand the needs and legal position of young people, particularly 16-18 year olds, and •the transition between children’s and adult legal frameworks and service provision
26. Understand processes for identifying whether a child or young person is known to professionals in Children’s Social Care and other agencies
27. Know when to escalate safeguarding concerns
28. An understanding child death process
