Offer description

The University of Surrey is a global community of ideas and people, dedicated to life-changing education and research. We are ambitious and have a bold vision of what we want to achieve - shaping ourselves into one of the best universities in the world, which we are achieving through the talents and endeavour of every employee. Our culture empowers people to achieve this aim and to collectively, and individually, make a real difference.

Guildford School of Acting (GSA) sits within the School of Arts, Humanities and Creative Industries at the University of Surrey and is one of the most highly regarded conservatoires in the UK, with a vibrant community of performers, performance makers, creative practitioners and technicians graduating from our wide variety of programmes each year. As well as providing professional training and study at undergraduate and postgraduate level, GSA also runs a Junior Conservatoire, a Saturday School, and a number of other short courses, as well as a full programme of public productions and events.

The role

We are seeking an experienced individual to take up the post of Performing Arts Technician (Sound) in the technical team, within the Operations and Events Department at GSA.

The Technician provides technical expertise to support the delivery of all programmes and the development and application of appropriate skills and capabilities, in order to assist the realisation of GSA theatre productions, other public arts events, research events, student society events, open days, conferences, lectures and meetings.

The team also provides equipment, support, mentoring and maintenance, ensuring a high standard for all GSA activities. Providing an excellent student experience is central to all we do.

The hours are typically Monday-Friday, 9-5 (around production work).

About you

The successful candidate will have experience of working within a Sound department on varied live productions and will preferably have experience of working in a Conservatoire or other Higher Education setting.

You will be an experienced sound technician with good administrative, pastoral and inter-personal skills and knowledge of current practices and techniques in professional theatre and entertainment production.

You will be well organised, able to meet deadlines and manage your own workload, taking responsibility for supervising, demonstrating and mentoring students and freelance staff, managing and repairing equipment and the sound equipment budget.

You will have up-to-date knowledge of Health & Safety and a commitment to promoting safe working and inclusive practices.

What we can offer

As a new colleague at GSA you will join a thriving HE theatre community, working with excellent colleagues and students. In addition to salary, you will receive a yearly incremental pay rise, generous annual leave entitlement and pension, access to world-class leisure facilities on campus, a range of travel schemes, and supportive family friendly benefits including an excellent on-site nursery.

We encourage continued professional practice through external work where possible and we have opportunities to work with both future professionals and established industry practitioners on GSA Productions.

Further Information

To apply, please upload a CV and covering letter to the University website. You will also be asked some brief questions to help us understand your suitability for the role.

For an informal discussion about this post, please contact Sarah Sage, Theatre Technical Manager at

Interviews will be held on campus 17th September.

At GSA and the University of Surrey, we are committed to working together to create an inclusive environment that offers equitable opportunities for all, pursuing our vision to be a leading global University. We place great value on diversity and welcome applicants from all backgrounds. We are seeking to increase the diversity within our community, and would particularly encourage applications from under-represented groups, such as people from Black, Asian and minority ethnic groups, people with disabilities and those identifying as non-binary or trans. Appointments will be made on merit.
