Job Summary
Neonatal Home Care Team – Band 6 – Neonatal Deputy Home Care Sister / Deputy Home Care Charge Nurse. This role offers dynamic, enthusiastic, motivated and experienced children’s or neonatal nurses, or midwives with Neonatal experience, to be part of a home‑care team at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH).
Main Duties
This specialist nursing role supports families to discharge safely from neonatal units, providing transitional care and paediatric support in the home environment. Responsibilities include:
 * Providing safe early discharge of babies from neonatal units and transitional care.
 * Supporting families with ongoing care needs in the home, such as nasogastric tube feeding and oxygen management.
 * Managing surgical babies and home phototherapy (jaundice management).
 * Delivering emotional support, building relationships and empowering parents throughout the journey from admission to discharge.
 * Co‑ordinating with multidisciplinary team members and ensuring high‑quality care in the home setting.
 * Participating in 10% clinical shift on the Neonatal unit at SFH or NUH.
Working Pattern
Home care service hours: 08:00–19:00, 10.5‑hour shifts or split‑shift basis. Full‑time or part‑time, 10% clinical shift required on neonatal unit.
Qualifications & Experience (Essential)
 * Registered NICU (RNC) or Registered Neonatal Assistant (RNA)
 * Current registration with the NMC
 * Mentorship qualification and/or Mentorship and Teaching & assessing qualification
 * Competent in medicines management
 * Experience of caring for neonates in hospital or community environment
 * Ability to plan and deliver safe discharge for neonatal babies
 * Knowledge of transitional care
 * Portfolio demonstrating continuous professional development
 * Evidence of performance reviews and change management
 * Full clean driving licence
 * Computer literate
Qualifications & Experience (Desirable)
 * Post‑registration qualification in speciality (QIS) or additional qualification relevant to role
 * NLS provider
 * Current or previous neonatal intensive care experience
Communication & Relationship Skills
 * Able to deliver complex, sensitive information effectively.
 * Effective communication with patients, carers and multidisciplinary team.
 * Strong working relationships with parents/carers and team members.
 * Able to produce timely, accurate written and electronic records.
 * Familiarity with information technology, particularly electronic communication systems.
 * Evidence of presentation skills using PowerPoint or similar.
Analytical & Judgement Skills
 * Able to lead a team, prioritise and respond to planned and unplanned situations.
 * Assess staff competence and confidence in clinical practice.
 * Make judgements and decisions regarding care planning and delivery.
 * Experience of audit/research tools and service improvement.
Planning and Organisational Skills
 * Prioritise and manage own time and workload and that of the team.
 * Plan, coordinate and deliver clinical education programmes.
 * Disseminate Trust and NHS policies appropriately in absence of homecare sister.
Physical Skills
 * Walk or stand for extended periods.
 * Frequent manoeuvre of patients and equipment in confined spaces.
 * Move or lift relevant teaching aids and materials.
 * Drive for significant periods.
