About the role
Balfour Beatty is currently recruiting a Principal Civil Designer & Team Lead to join the Power T&D team in Derby.
Background does not have to be within the High Voltage Power industry, as the delivery of construction design management is transferable. Our stakeholders, clients, and engineering teams value good quality leadership and a commitment to achieving project goals.
This is an exciting opportunity for an energetic, passionate individual with a strong background in Civil Engineering.
The main function of the role is to work with project teams, designers, and subcontractors through the design phase to deliver safe and appropriate scope of works aligned with project objectives.
Take responsibility for the design delivery and suitability of civil works across Power T&D construction projects, with a focus on Substations Civils.
Provide advice on the constructability and sequencing of civil design for Power T&D.
Lead the day-to-day management of the Substation Civils design team and engage in bid development, tendering, and innovation projects alongside the Design Delivery Manager.

What you'll be doing
Key Accountabilities:
To undertake the design and coordination of civil designs required on substation projects, from initial feasibility assessment through to detailed design, installation, and final removal.
Ensure the timely and high-quality delivery of designs by the individual and the Civil Substation Design team. Prepare reports, calculations, and drawings to a high technical standard compliant with Client and technical standards (BS/Eurocodes/ENA).
Understand and capture Client requirements, including those not explicitly stated within the contract. Contribute to robust pricing and design delivery solutions.
Provide line management support for the Civil Substation Design Team.
Key Responsibilities:
* Drive a Safety by Design approach at all times.
* Lead various civil project designs including reinforced concrete design and detailing, site design and enablement, land development, drainage systems, and building and structure installation.
* Maintain compliance with CDM regulations and all other legal and regulatory requirements related to team outputs.
* Undertake technical quality assurance reviews and approve designs as permitted by the Chief Engineer.
* Collaborate with other design team elements for effective multidisciplinary project delivery.
* Assist in managing the tender process, interpret scope of works, and provide advice.
* Ensure procedures and manuals for Quality Assurance are applied.
* Mentor and guide team members.
* Develop policies, processes, and procedures for continuous improvement.
* Report on potential and actual pipeline of work, staff utilization, capability development, and opportunities.
* Act as Contractor Design Approval Engineer (CDAE) or similar role when appropriate.
* Support engineering design delivery, upskilling, and software use. Contribute to development and updating of design aids and computer programs.
* Support colleagues in managing output and delivery of suitable design drawings.
* Assist in setting team objectives, strategy, and requirements.
Who we're looking for
* Degree in civil engineering or equivalent with formal training.
* Chartered Engineer with ICE or IStructE.
* Proven post-graduate experience in civil engineering.
* Experience supervising sub-consultants or subcontractors.
* Design experience in civil engineering works.
* Management experience in civil or geotechnical engineering design.
* IT literate (Word, Excel, CAD).
* Extensive civil design experience in substations.
* Expertise in Tekla Tedds.
