About the role

This Postdoctoral Research Fellowship is funded by the A. G. Leventis Foundation, and its aim is to provide a career development opportunity for someone who is at a relatively early stage of their academic career. Therefore, applicants must not yet have held a full-time permanent academic post in a university or comparable institution or have had a previous long-term research fellowship. Applicants must have completed their doctorate, but they should not have had their doctoral viva more than five years from the application closing date (except in cases of career breaks). The successful candidate will have a research interest in an area of ancient Greek literature and / or culture, which may include its reception in Latin literature or in the literature and culture of later periods. The postholder will also be expected to contribute to departmental conferences in ancient Greek culture, to undertake cultural and outreach activities and to oversee the annual Greek Play performed by the Department’s students. There will be access to a limited amount of funding to facilitate research activities. The Fellow will contribute to the Department’s teaching (c. 60 contact hours = 3 one-term modules per academic year).

Main purpose of the job

1. To increase the Department’s visibility as a centre for research on Greek literature and culture and for its dissemination
2. To produce research outputs in the form of articles, books and / or conference and seminar papers
3. To contribute to the Department’s research culture
4. To contribute to presenting aspects of Greek literature and culture to the general public and school students
5. To contribute to the education of the Department’s undergraduate and postgraduate students

Duties and responsibilities

6. To pursue high-quality original research on Greek literature and / or culture and / or its context
7. Deliver c. three undergraduate modules per year ( provide lectures, seminars and advisory services for students, liaise with Postgraduate Teaching Assistants where necessary and examine) and contribute to postgraduate teaching and supervision as required
8. To organize conferences and workshops on aspects of Greek culture
9. To organize and contribute to cultural and outreach activities
10. To oversee the annual classical Play

In addition to the above the post-holder is expected to:

About you

You should have completed a PhD in a relevant area, have the ability or potential to carry out high-quality research and have experience in teaching Greek and Latin language and literature at undergraduate level. In addition to this, you should have excellent communication skills, be able to work well independently and collaboratively in a research community.
