Job overview

At Robertson Nero Rehab Ward, we are committed to delivering high-quality, patient-centred care. We are seeking an enthusiastic and skilled Occupational Therapist to join our dedicated team in providing essential rehabilitation services for individuals with complex neurological conditions. This is a fantastic opportunity for professionals passionate about making a difference in the lives of patients and their families.

As an Occupational Therapist at Robertson, you will play a key role in helping patients with neurological conditions regain independence and function. You will be responsible for:

* Delivering specialised assessments and rehabilitation to patients admitted to the neuro rehab ward, as well as providing care in the community and patients' homes.
* Managing a complex caseload that includes patients with physical, cognitive, and psychological health needs.
* Developing individualised treatment plans to promote positive rehabilitation outcomes and support timely, coordinated discharge planning.
* Collaborating with a multidisciplinary team, providing expert advice and guidance to professionals, carers and relatives.
* Supervising junior staff and students, while ensuring high standards of practice within the team.


Main duties of the job

* Conduct advanced Occupational Therapy assessments for patients with diverse physical and cognitive needs, using manual assessment techniques and clinical reasoning to provide an accurate diagnosis.
* Develop and deliver evidence-based treatment programmes, including exercise prescription, splinting, education and alternative therapeutic options.
* Take a leadership role in delivering specialist therapy to patients with complex neurological conditions across various rotations.
* Deliver person-centred care, setting realistic goals and ensuring safe, ethical practice in relation to consent and decision-making.
* Working collaboratively within a specialist multidisciplinary team, practising autonomously to optimise patient outcomes.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Person specification


Education and Qualification

* Registration with HCPC.
* Experience of working with neurological patients in delivery of rehabilitation packages or in a rehab setting at Band 5 level.
* Documented evidence of professional development and reflective practice in relevant aspects of neurological rehabilitation e.g. attendance at in-service training sessions, reflective practice
* Attendance at relevant post-graduate neurological training courses e.g. Bobath, spasticity management, splinting, cognition and perceptual assessment, fatigue management
* Experience of working in a neurological rehabilitation setting at band 6 level.


Experience

* Ability and experience of carrying out a comprehensive neurological occupational therapy assessment to formulate a comprehensive neurological treatment plan and goals.
* Knowledge and experience of using a wide range of therapeutic occupational therapy interventions for the treatment of patients with neurological conditions.
* Knowledge and experience of using a range of recognised outcome measures and goal setting skills as appropriate to the rehabilitation of patients with a range of neurological conditions.
* Able to work with individuals and groups
* Clinical problem solving ability
* Knowledge of Occupational Therapy models of practice
* Understand professional ethics and their application in practice
* React in a flexible way to changing demands in service
* Good understanding of current NHS issues, professional standards, CPD, clinical governance.
* Able to work as an autonomous practitioner
* Experience of supervising and appraising other staff e.g. rehabilitation assistants
* Experience of supervising student occupational therapists.
* Experience in delivering training to other members of the MDT and care workers
* Understanding of clinical governance and the implications for the service
* Delegated management responsibilities within service area
* Innovative ideas


Skills and Knowledge

* Ability to communicate complex and/or sensitive information requiring empathy and reassurance
* Knowledge of barriers to communication and strategies to overcome them, including knowledge of communication difficulties encountered by neurological patients.
* Ability to carry out patient manual handling tasks.
* Ability to carry equipment such as wheelchair and commodes in and out of stores/ car and patient`s homes.
* Ability to work on the floor and in cramped spaces
* Ability to work under time constraints
* Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team.
* Ability to deal with challenging behaviour and patients with life limiting illnesses
* Able to facilitate self-management behaviour-change skills in patients
* Work in a team and understand team dynamics
* Keep legible and accurate patient records in English.
* Clinical problem solving ability in complex cases.
* Physical skills, dexterity, coordination and sensory skills for assessment and manual treatment of patients.
* A good ability with specific handling and sensory techniques specific to the treatment of patients with neurological dysfunction.
