We’re looking for a new Senior Communications Officer to join our Communications and Digital team at a pivotal time of our growth as an organisation. We’re looking for someone with considerable experience of marketing and communications, who can lend their hand to many and varied tasks, from writing long‑form articles for the veterinary press, to managing complex marketing and communication plans, to creating multimedia content and engaging audiences on social media. You’ll also line‑manage the Communications Assistant in the team.

Job purpose
To manage communications and marketing plans and create content in a broad range of formats for online and offline channels in support of the organisation’s Strategic Plan. To support the Head of Communications and Digital in managing and developing the RCVS Knowledge brand and to deliver the Communications and Digital strategy.
Key responsibilities
* To create and oversee integrated communications and marketing plans across owned, earned and paid‑for channels in support of the organisation’s strategic objectives
* To own and manage communications and marketing plans across key areas of the organisation, overseeing the planning, implementation and evaluation of communications and marketing activity
* To support the Head of Communications and Digital to deliver a cohesive and consistent communications, marketing and digital strategy
* To advise teams across the organisation on communications and marketing best practice, and support the delivery of key projects
* To create, manage and evaluate content for digital channels – including e‑newsletters, webinars, podcasts, videos and events
* To coordinate the production of print content, including posters, flyers, banners by writing copy, developing feature ideas, proofing/subbing, liaising with designers, printers and mailing houses as required
* To respond to media enquiries, drafting press releases, columns, press letters and features, and selling feature ideas into the media. This work will include carrying out interviews, liaising with stakeholders and assisting with the development of key messages
* To manage and moderate the organisation’s social media accounts in conjunction with other members of the Communications team
* To keep up‑to‑date with communications and social media best practice and feed into the continuous development of RCVS Knowledge social media strategy
* To act as an ambassador for the organisation, establishing and maintaining excellent working relationships with key stakeholders across academia, professional bodies, media representatives and veterinary practitioners
* To build and manage strong relationships with the relevant news media – professional, academic, consumer and national/ regional – and help maintain the media/comms database
* To monitor the media, including social media and online fora, flagging up issues and/or responding on behalf of the charity when appropriate
* To line‑manage the Communications Assistant, set their goals and oversee their performance
Other
* To establish and maintain excellent working relationships with the wider RCVS and, in particular, the Communications team
* To undertake any other duties commensurate with the objectives of the post
* To undertake and attend professional development events, as required
* To contribute to the wider activities of RCVS Knowledge, as appropriate
Required skills, knowledge and experience
* Considerable communications, marketing and content creation experience, overseeing the work of others including external suppliers
* Excellent writing skills, with the proven ability to produce high‑quality, clear and persuasive written material for a range of different audiences and channels
* Experience of managing communications plans from planning to implementation and evaluation, developing key messages and working with teams across the organisation to support the delivery of key objectives
* Ideally 12 months of line management or supervising experience of a junior member of staff
* Knowledge of communications and marketing principles, including audience insight
* Comprehensive understanding of branding and tone of voice
* Good organisational skills, ability to ‘multi‑task’, with ability to meet tight deadlines
* Ability to ‘find the story’ and identify key messages
* Attention to detail and proof‑reading ability
* Experience of carrying out interviews – over the phone and in person
* Advanced skills in Microsoft Office
* Extensive experience of working with and managing social media channels
* Confidence in meetings and when offering communications advice to colleagues
* Proactive, and able to develop creative ideas
* Experience in Adobe Creative Suite, ideally including Audition and Premiere Pro
* Team player – ability to work with internal and external colleagues collaboratively and in a team‑orientated way
* Ability to network and develop contacts
* A positive ‘can‑do’ approach, a practical approach to problem‑solving
Desirable skills, knowledge and experience
* Ideally educated to degree level, preferably related to science
* Experience of brand management
* Experience of web editing, CMS systems and email delivery systems (Mail Chimp)
* An understanding of the not‑for‑profit sector
* Knowledge of the veterinary/animal health and welfare sector
