It’s our mission to seamlessly provide the most detailed global air quality information to improve human health worldwide. By exposing air pollution in real-time, we deliver actionable insights that empower better decision-making and more effective mitigation strategies. We’re looking for a Data Scientist to bolster our efforts in ensuring world-class data quality and reliability, playing a central role in shaping the future of our air quality measurement technologies. Who are we?
Initially spun out from academia in 2016,
EarthSense
is revolutionising air pollution management. We combine sensor networks, modelling, and advanced analytics to close data gaps and provide trusted environmental intelligence. Our work empowers governments, researchers, and businesses to tackle poor air quality with clarity and confidence. Since inception, we’ve achieved
40% year-on-year growth
through three core product lines: Zephyr
– Our cost-effective, innovative air quality monitoring device. MappAir
– A high-resolution global model of air quality trends. MyAir
– Our web-based platform providing actionable environmental insights. As we continue to expand globally, we are strengthening our scientific and technical foundations to ensure that EarthSense remains at the forefront of trusted air quality data. Who do we need for the next step?
We’re after someone passionate about
data quality, sensor science, and advanced analytics
to help shape the future of environmental monitoring. You’ll play a vital role in ensuring our sensor fleet delivers reliable, regulatory-compliant data, and you’ll apply cutting-edge statistical and machine learning methods to enhance measurement accuracy and unlock new insights. You’d be responsible for: Designing and implementing
calibration, validation, and quality control protocols
for our air quality sensors. Developing
test programmes
to evaluate and categorise sensor performance. Applying
machine learning, neural networks, and statistical techniques
to optimise data quality, resolve anomalies, and account for drift and environmental interferences. Collaborating with hardware engineers, software developers, and fellow data scientists to
feed insights back into product development. Monitoring and managing
co-location studies, expanding our global pool of validation datasets. Help steering on
compliance and accreditation, ensuring our systems meet standards such as
DEFRA (PAS), MCERTS, EU Directives (CEN), and WHO guidelines. Acting as a
technical expert, guiding both internal teams and customers on data quality, interpretation, and best practice. What skills will you have?
Ideally, you’ll have a strong background in environmental data science, instrumentation, or atmospheric measurement, with a proven ability to turn complex datasets into robust insights. Some of the fundamentals you’d bring are: Experience with
sensor instrumentation, calibration, and data validation. Strong coding skills in
Python or R
for advanced data processing and analysis. Knowledge of
machine learning, neural networks, and big data techniques
applied to environmental or sensor data. Solid understanding of
sensor technologies, their limitations, and performance compared with reference instruments. Familiarity with
air quality measurement standards and regulations
(DEFRA, MCERTS, EU directives, WHO). Strong communication skills, able to translate technical findings for technical and non-technical audiences alike. We’d also love if you had: Experience working with
IoT sensor networks, telemetry systems, or data acquisition frameworks. Knowledge of
modelling frameworks
and integrating sensor data with predictive models. An appetite for solving complex environmental challenges through innovation and collaboration. What can EarthSense offer?
Starting salary up to £45k, based on experience, with bonus potential (up to 45% of base salary, yearly). 25 days paid leave, plus public holidays, your birthday off, and an extra day per year of service (up to 5). Option to
buy or sell up to 5 days holiday
per year. Access to the
WeCare health and wellbeing scheme, including physical and mental health support. Prescription eyewear covered. Choice of
Windows or Mac tech, plus a
tax-efficient tech purchase scheme
for personal items. Exclusive discounts
on high-street shopping and the Cycle-to-Work scheme. Why apply? This isn’t just another data role, it’s an opportunity to
define the gold standard of air quality measurement, apply cutting-edge data science to real-world challenges, and make a global impact in environmental health. Apply now and help us revolutionise air quality!
