Band 3 Research Assistant

The purpose of this post is to provide comprehensive support. The assistant will be expected to perform a variety of clerical/research duties within a research environment and in such a way as to make a direct and positive contribution to the organisation of the work.
Job responsibilities
* Liaise with all other departments within the hospital, i.e. wards, medical outpatient departments, medical records, etc. with regard to all aspects of patient care, e.g. appointments, investigations, etc.
* Assist Research Nurse with patient study visits and clinical trial procedures. This will include venepuncture, vital signs, placement of Holter ECG monitoring equipment and ECG recording (after appropriate training).
* Operate computer systems to enter and retrieve data (Trust electronic patient records and Microsoft Excel etc.).
* Maintain screening logs for clinical trials.
* Collection of data using a variety of methods (face to face contacts; telephone; email etc).
* Identification of suitable patients for clinical trials (screening medical records / wards / clinics) after appropriate training.
* Deal with telephone enquiries from patients, relatives, medical staff and clinical trial personnel, recording messages where appropriate.
* Retrieval of medical records, investigation reports, etc.
* General clerical duties including filing, photocopying, faxing and correspondence.
* Attend training courses as and when required.
* To comply with ICH GCP.
* Promote, monitor and comply with all aspects of health and safety.
* Undertake any other duties deemed relevant to the post and grade.

Qualifications
* NVQ3 in relevant subject or equivalent
Experience
* Spreadsheets/databases
* Experience of working in a health care setting
Knowledge
* Medical terminology
* An understanding of ethical and quality standards applicable to clinical trials, including EU Directive on ICH GCP requirements
* Good working knowledge of hospital information systems
Skills
* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills both written and verbal
* Meticulous attention to detail and a high standard of accuracy, e.g. in the capture and validation of clinical trial data
* Sufficient computer skills; Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Internet and email
* Ability to use tact and a sensitive approach to patients and relatives
