Overview
Respiratory Nurse Specialist required to provide inpatient and outpatient respiratory care at Aintree University Hospital. The service includes inpatient COPD and Asthma reviews, home oxygen assessments and nebuliser trials, and nurse-led outpatient clinics for COPD, Asthma, Bronchiectasis and Oxygen. The post involves working with hospital and primary care teams, community respiratory colleagues, and other local oxygen services. A high level of clinical decision-making is required, with the ability to work independently. Post-registration training, a willingness to develop clinical skills, and at least 2 years of respiratory experience are essential. Excellent communication skills and the ability to educate patients, carers and health care professionals are required. A driving licence and access to a car are essential.
Responsibilities
* Work as part of a team of Respiratory Nursing Specialists to provide ward cover, assess inpatients with respiratory conditions, and advise and implement management plans.
* Complete home oxygen assessments and review oxygen prescriptions for inpatients and outpatients, including home visits.
* Assess and provide discharge bundles for patients admitted with exacerbations of airway disease.
* Run nurse-led outpatient clinics, supported by Band 7 colleagues.
* Participate in clinical audit, contribute to teaching and clinical supervision, and engage in service development projects.

Job responsibilities (clinical)
* Perform comprehensive assessment of patient needs (including clinical examination and arterial blood gas sampling); plan, implement and evaluate care delivery accordingly.
* Maintain effective communication within the multidisciplinary team to optimise care for respiratory patients and their families.
* Liaise with community matrons, GPs and other teams to enhance the respiratory care pathway.
* With Band 7 support, manage nurse-led clinics in Asthma, COPD, Bronchiectasis and Oxygen; provide expert advice, education and support.
* Recognise limitations and refer to a more experienced clinician when required; present patients at MDTs as needed.
* Provide care from diagnosis through to end-stage disease; demonstrate empathetic, advanced communication with patients and carers.
* Promote healthier lifestyle choices and utilise the Every Contact Counts approach.
* Request and interpret laboratory tests and respiratory function tests; perform advanced clinical skills in assessment, diagnosis and treatment.
* Maintain accurate patient records and involve patients and carers in planning and delivery of care.
* Maintain effective communication with patients, carers and professionals across health and social services.
* Provide specialist clinical knowledge to colleagues and contribute to protocols and policies as required.
Education and Development
* Identify learning needs and plan/implement/evaluate education programmes; provide teaching and clinical supervision; participate in pre/post-registration nurse education and curriculum development where appropriate.
* Ensure compliance with mandatory training requirements.
* Engage in clinical governance activities, research and audits to improve patient care and service delivery.

* Maintain active NMC registration and adhere to professional standards and Trust policies.
