Post No. POSN005009 - Senior Practitioner - Adult Safeguarding Fixed Term (funded until March 2027) Newport City Council is seeking an experienced and motivated qualified social worker to join our Adult Safeguarding Team on a fixed term basis, with funding currently in place until March 2027, and with a key focus on initial safeguarding screening and decision making at the point of referral. The post is graded at Senior Practitioner level and offers an opportunity to work within Adult Social Services as part of the wider Safeguarding Service. The role focuses on safeguarding screening, triage and decision making, with the postholder playing a central role in receiving, reviewing and responding to Duty to Report (DTR) concerns involving adults at risk. Safeguarding responses must be timely, proportionate and defensible, in line with statutory duties and local procedures. The post sits within the First Contact function but remains professionally aligned to the Adult Safeguarding Team. Working closely with First Contact colleagues, Adult Services teams and partner agencies, the postholder will provide professional safeguarding oversight from referral through to decision making, ensuring that risks are identified early and managed appropriately. The role also includes the coordination of safeguarding activity where required, including professional strategy discussions, multi agency planning and matters relating to People in Positions of Trust (PIPOT). This is a key role in strengthening Adult Services safeguarding practice at the point of referral and ensuring that adults at risk receive the right response at the right time. Key Responsibilities - Provide professional safeguarding expertise at the point of referral, supporting timely and defensible decision making. - Receive, screen and triage Duty to Report (DTR) referrals, applying safeguarding thresholds and proportionate risk analysis. - Work closely with the First Contact Team to support robust risk assessment, appropriate signposting and reduced unfiltered demand. - Coordinate and support Adult at Risk safeguarding enquiries, ensuring statutory timescales, quality standards and proportionate risk management. - Identify concerns relating to People in Positions of Trust (PIPOT) and progress Part 5 work where required, in line with Wales Safeguarding Procedures. - Provide professional safeguarding advice, guidance and reassurance to colleagues across Social Care and partner agencies. What We're Looking For You will be a qualified social worker, registered with Social Care Wales, with experience of statutory safeguarding practice and the skills and confidence to operate at Senior Practitioner level within a fast paced referral and screening environment. A strong working knowledge of relevant safeguarding legislation and the ability to make clear, proportionate and defensible safeguarding decisions are essential.
