Overview

National and Specialist Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (N&S CAMHS) seek an enthusiastic and organised Assistant Psychologist to fulfil audit and clinical support roles in the Outreach team at the Maudsley Centre for Child and Adolescent Eating Disorders (MCCAED). MCCAED is a busy multi-disciplinary service which receives a high volume of referrals each week. The post-holder will support the team during assessments and through management of routine outcome measures for young people. There will be opportunity for involvement in meal support and therapy groups for young people with eating disorders. This post provides the opportunity to work in an internationally recognised service that developed current NICE recommended eating disorder focused family therapy. The post holder will assist practitioner psychologists and other multi-disciplinary team members in delivering a specialist applied formulation-based service in MCCAED, supporting children and young people with eating disorders and their families.

Location: Maudsley Centre for Child and Adolescent Eating Disorders, Michael Rutter Centre for Children and Young People, Maudsley Hospital, Denmark Hill (zone 2). Trust headquarters are also at Denmark Hill. Please note: move to Pears Maudsley Children and Young People (PMCYP) at the Maudsley Hospital in late 2025/early 2026. Flexible working is available; hours typically 09:00–17:00, Monday to Friday, with potential for early mornings, later evenings or Saturdays as part of core hours/working pattern.


Responsibilities

* Involve in the multidisciplinary assessment of young people and their families for treatment in the MCCAED Service; detailed note taking and subsequent report writing.
* Provide support for clinicians delivering groups to young people and families, including material development, note taking and co-facilitation.
* Generate reports, record outcomes in clinical notes, and maintain databases for audit; collate and disseminate routine outcome measures at assessment and discharge.
* Take responsibility for data gathering and interpretation for service audits; support running of research and audit by preparing resources, recruitment of participants and data collection.
* Support the execution of observations, attending service-wide teaching/training events, and attending research meetings as appropriate.
* Coordinate organisational issues and facilitate assessment and treatment sessions; interact with a range of young people and their families.
* Contribute to the effective functioning of the MCCAED team by managing databases, tracking processes through pathways, and keeping them up to date.
* Support service development, equality, diversity and inclusion efforts, and working within a psychologically informed framework for the service.
* Adhere to policies and procedures in own area of work; engage in service user consultation and engagement in planning and delivery of services; contribute to relevant projects.
* Care and management of resources: use and monitor Trust equipment and resources; anticipate future needs and place orders as required.
* Teaching and training: demonstrate methods to Assistant Psychologists and support their skill development; contribute to dissemination of research and service evaluation findings; assist senior clinicians with teaching as needed.
* Record-keeping and information governance: ensure information generated is recorded per Trust policies and maintain high standards of clinical record keeping and report writing, including electronic data entry under supervision.
* Research and development: assist in design and implementation of audit/research projects; data collection, analysis, and reporting; literature searches; conduct service user surveys with guidance from senior clinicians.
* Maintain professional standards and continuing professional development: regular supervision, skill development, and adherence to regulatory guidelines and Trust policies.
* General: travel across the Trust as required; manage risk related to aggressive and challenging behaviour; respond appropriately to emotionally distressing situations; maintain flexible work patterns including late clinics or Saturdays as needed; work within MDT and promote open communication and collaboration with MCCAED staff and Michael Rutter Centre colleagues.
