Venesky-Brown are looking for a ESG Manager – Environmental Sustainability to join the Sizewell C team in London/Suffolk. This is a day rate contract which will be hybrid working from the London office, with some travel to Suffolk required (1-2 times per month).
Job Purpose / Overview:
This role is 1 Year maternity cover.
The purpose of the role is lead the development and implementation of the Sizewell C Environmental Sustainability (ESG) Commitments into the project and wider business, while providing oversight and reporting on behalf of Sizewell C that these are being delivered. This covers the areas of Carbon, Water, Circular Economy, Nature and management of the BREEAM Infrastructure Certification.
The role will lead the implementation strategy for these areas, ensuring accountability for delivery of each part of the strategy is clearly defined, along with managing the arrangements to comply with these commitments and providing surveillance, and monitoring of Sizewell C’s ESG activities. The post holder will be part of the Sizewell C Environmental Baseline and Intelligent Customer Capability.
Nuclear Safety / Environmental Accountabilities:
This Post will have environmental responsibilities which could have an impact on environmental management through the activities that they perform. These are detailed in the Environmental Baseline.
Dimensions
* Direct management of 4 x Staff plus additional Specialist Contractors (as required - currently estimated at 2 x FTE).
* Team lead to 6 x Staff plus additional Specialist Contractors (with scope to recruit further)
* Engagement with a wide range of senior internal and external stakeholders to ensure that the Sizewell C Project and wider business understand their role and accountabilities / responsibilities in supporting delivery of the environmental sustainability commitments.
* Much of the working week will be spent at the Sizewell C office in London, although there will be some need to travel to other locations such as Sizewell C.
* Sizewell C has adopted flexible working arrangements.
Financial (For example: Investments, Funding, Budget or Programme costs)
* The post holder will have responsibility for managing a budget and a number of contracts in support of delivering the Environmental Sustainability Workstreams.
Risk (for example Capital, Project or Performance risks)
* The Post Holder will manage those risks associated with Environmental Sustainability within the Corporate Risk Register.
* Failure to deliver the Environmental Sustainability Requirements can impact investment / funding, and Stakeholder Expectations / Reputation of the Project and wider business.
Other (for example: Complexity, Impact and Interdependencies)
* Sizewell C is aiming to put more back into the local community, the natural environment, and the UK economy than it takes out. We call this our “Net Zero Excellence” approach, which as well as helping to deliver net zero for the UK in the most cost-effective and reliable way possible, is also creating net positive outcomes against several UN Sustainable Development Goals.
* The project has made public announcements in the Development Consent Order (DCO) and other public pledges which outline the environmental and social value the project will bring to the local areas and the UK.
* We also have regulatory reporting obligations relating to sustainable development and data reporting requirements for our BREEAM Infrastructure Accreditation, and more generally, our stakeholders expect to see clear and transparent reporting of ESG matters.
Principal Accountabilities, Activities and Decisions:
* Responsible for leading the delivery of the Sizewell C Environmental Sustainability Implementation Strategy across the areas of Carbon, Carbon, Water, Circular Economy, Nature and management of the BREEAM Infrastructure Certification.
* Act as a subject matter expert for Environmental Sustainability and ESG Compliance on the SZC project including providing innovative solutions to reduce risk to delivery whilst creating net positive outcomes against several UN Sustainable Development Goals.
* Responsible for leading the development and maintenance of the arrangements for compliance with the SZC environmental sustainability commitments including the PAS 2080:2023 Certified Management System.
* Responsible for delivery of Sizewell C’s BREEAM Infrastructure Certification, achieving a minimum score of “Very Good”.
* Act as a catalyst for management system compliance and continuous improvement over all project phases by influencing actions for sustainable development.
* Responsible for oversight of the collation of the SZC Project Environmental Sustainability Metrics from both Sizewell C and its Supply Chain.
* Responsible for leading the reporting of ESG Metrics in support of the BREEAM Infrastructure Certification and wider Stakeholder Reporting (e.g., for onwards transmission to investors, UK Government etc.) including input in the Annual Sustainability Report.
* Responsible for oversight of the risk informed functional assurance of Environmental Sustainability throughout the Sizewell C Project including:
* That the Project / Contractors follow the Environmental Sustainability arrangements and meet requirements.
* Ensuring Environmental Sustainability is being considered throughout the Design Development of Sizewell C, through our Design Change Process.
* That the Commercial / Procurement Process considers ESG matters in the award of Bespoke (SZC Specific) Contracts, and that the ESG Requirements are being embedded across all SZC Contracts.
* Leading the Regulatory Engagements with the EA in support of our sustainability commitments.
* Responsible for approval of work conducted by HPC and the supply chain on behalf of the SZC organisation in support of the Environmental Sustainability scope and objectives.
* Line Management and Oversight of the ESG - Environmental Sustainability Team.
Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications, Experience
Knowledge & Skills
* Good working knowledge of sustainability and ESG in the UK relevant to a construction site, plus knowledge of the supporting industry best practice.
* Excellent understanding of key sustainability issues, preferably with specialist knowledge of environmental issues relevant to the company, and reporting and benchmarking methodologies.
* General professional qualities such as accuracy, tenacity, result-oriented, the ability to work well within a team, diplomacy.
Qualifications & Experience
* Solid technical grounding in environmental compliance, gained through previous experience including driving the implementation and embedding of management arrangements.
* Experience of developing and leading strong relationships with the regulators, investors and other public bodies.
* Degree qualified or equivalent in an environmental, science or related discipline.
* Demonstrable leadership experience.
* Experience in managing the implementation of regulatory / investor commitments / requirements.
* Experience in working on a Large Infrastructure Project would be an advantage.
* Qualified in CEEQUAL Assessments, with some experience of participating, overseeing or delivering the scheme.
* Member of a related Professional Body & relevant chartership.
* Experience of operating within an environmental management system (EMS) conforming to recognised standards (BS EN ISO14001:2004), including the development of procedures to meet the requirements of the EMS.
