Role Summary
You will draft, review, and negotiate legal costs documentation across a range of legal matters. You will advise on cost strategy, manage cost recovery, support fee-earners, and contribute to developing best practices within the new Legal Costing Department.
Key Responsibilities
* Draft bills of costs, cost schedules, points of dispute / reply
* Prepare and negotiate costs budgets (e.g. Precedent H, cost management documents)
* Handle detailed assessments, court submissions, correspondence, and settlement negotiations
* Advise solicitors / fee-earners on cost strategy, funding, cost recoverability and risks
* Liaise with clients, counsel, and opposing parties on cost issues
* Use cost software tools, maintain cost records, review disbursements
* Monitor cost items, reconcile adjustments, ensure accuracy
* Stay up to date with Civil Procedure Rules, costs law, and court practice
* Help design and refine processes, train junior staff, and contribute to department development
Person Specification / Requirements
Essential:
* Significant experience in legal costs drafting (bills, budgets, assessment work)
* Strong drafting, analytical, numerical, and negotiation skills
* Good knowledge of costs procedure and Civil Procedure Rules
* Ability to manage multiple files, meet deadlines, work precisely
* Proficiency with Microsoft Office and legal / costs software
Desirable / Advantageous:
* Exposure to Legal Aid / publicly funded costs work
* Experience with complex or high value cost matters
* Supervisory / training experience
* Membership / progression toward the Association of Costs Lawyers (ACL)
Knowledge of CostMaster
* Solid working knowledge of CostsMaster Draftsman (or equivalent costs drafting software)
* Experience importing time entries from external systems, assigning work to phases/parts, editing cost grids, handling disbursements, and generating output (Word, PDF, Excel) CostsMaster+1
* Familiarity with mapping templates, resolving rounding/discrepancy issues, and producing electronic bills, budgets, and cost documents via CostMaster
