Pre-term Birth and Multiples Lead Midwife

The closing date is 05 May 2026

Preterm birth (PTB), defined as birth at less than 37+0 week's gestation, is a common complication of pregnancy, comprising around 8% of births in England and Wales. Prematurity is the most significant cause of mortality in children under five and is associated with significant morbidity in surviving infants. PTB is estimated to cost health services in England and Wales £3.4bn per year.

The Lead Midwife role is essential for compliance with Element 5 of the SBLCB v3.2 and will be pivotal in leading on and embedding the British Association of Perinatal Medicine (BAPM) Perinatal Optimisation Pathway to help improve preterm outcomes.

The Lead Midwife contributes to strategic and operational leadership within the maternity service, supporting governance, service development, and alignment with national maternity transformation priorities with a strong emphasis on continuity and personalisation of care.

As a visible leader and role model, the postholder drives innovation, consistency, and excellence in preterm birth and multiple pregnancy care across the Humber Health Partnership Group.

Main duties of the job

The Preterm Birth and Multiple Birth Lead Midwife is a pivotal role in improving outcomes for women, birthing people, and babies at increased risk of preterm labour or multiple pregnancy.

This position is site based at either HUTH or NLAG; however, pan‑group working across the Humber Health Partnership is required.

As an expert practitioner, you will provide specialist, evidence‑based and holistic care, coordinating dedicated preterm birth and multiple pregnancy clinics.

The Lead Midwife acts as a consistent point of contact for complex cases, supporting personalised care planning and shared decision‑making whilst working closely with the multidisciplinary teams to embed specialist support across the pathway.

You must provide strong leadership for multiple pregnancy care, ensuring compliance with NICENG137 and coordinating the multidisciplinary team responsible for surveillance, growth monitoring, and planning for timing and mode of birth.

You will offer specialist counselling and support to families expecting multiples and ensure equitable access to high‑quality, personalised care.

About us

The Humber Health Partnership is one of the largest acute and community Partnership arrangements in the NHS, seeing well over one million patients every year and managing a budget of over £1.3 billion.

Made up of two Trusts – Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust (NLAG) and Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (HUTH) – our Partnership has significant ambitions and is committed to delivering world‑class hospital and community services for the 1.65 million people we serve.

Together we employ nearly 20,000 staff. Our five main hospital sites are Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital, Scunthorpe General Hospital, Goole and District Hospital for NLAG and Hull Royal Infirmary and Castle Hill Hospital for HUTH.

As Teaching Hospitals working with the Hull York Medical School, we both lead and contribute to research in many areas – biomedical research, primary care, palliative medicine, cardiovascular and respiratory medicine, vascular surgery, cancer surgery and oncology.

We believe that by developing a diverse, inclusive, innovative, skilled and caring workforce, we can deliver excellent care to our patients and a great future for our employees, our Partnership and our community.
