About the role
Balfour Beatty has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Temporary Works Designer to join our Power Transmission & Distribution business in Derby.
We are open to both full-time and part-time candidates (including job share), and offer a flexible working policy.
Role purpose: To work with project teams, designers, and subcontractors through the design phase to deliver the safe and suitable scope of works in line with the project objectives. Take responsibility for design delivery and suitability for works across Power T&D construction projects, focusing on Temporary Works delivery. Provide advice on the constructability and sequencing of civil design and temporary works for Power T&D around Cabling, Overhead Lines, and Substations. Engage in bid development, tendering, and innovation projects alongside the Team Lead & Design Delivery Manager.
What you'll be doing
Key Accountabilities:
* Design and coordinate civil and temporary works designs from feasibility to detail design, installation, and removal, including in-house temporary works design where appropriate.
* Ensure timely delivery and high-quality standards, complying with client and national standards (BS/Eurocodes/ENA), including reports, calculations, and drawings.
* Understand and capture client requirements, including those not explicitly stated, and contribute to robust pricing and design solutions.
Key Responsibilities:
Assess and identify design and temporary works requirements, including:
* Reinforced Concrete design and detailing
* Construction site layouts and CDM compliance
* Excavation support for tower foundations or cable trenches
* Formwork and setting templates for foundations
* Piling and Crane Platforms
* Access roads and traffic management plans
* Checks on scaffolds and protective structures
* Catenary Support System (in-house system)
* Backstays and steelwork for towers
* Temporary overhead line diversions
* Produce and assist with in-house temporary works design
* Manage tender processes, interpret scope, and provide advice
* Review design calculations by colleagues
* Work closely with project teams to meet objectives
* Liaise with personnel for installation procedures and site visits
* Embed “Safety by Design” principles, ensuring safety regulations are followed
* Assist in training new designers and trainees
* Perform other duties as required by team leads
* Maintain compliance with CDM regulations and legal requirements

Who we're looking for
Skills Required:
* Degree in civil engineering or equivalent with formal training
* Membership with ICE or IStructE, working towards Chartered Engineer
* Post-graduate civil engineering experience
* Knowledge of BS5975
* Experience supervising sub-consultants/subcontractors
* Design experience in civil engineering works
* Management experience of civil or temporary works design
* Experience in temporary works design and checking
* Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, CAD
