2. Spending time with patients who are on their own.
3. Organizing recreational, social, and therapeutic activities such as games, puzzles, reading, reminiscing hobbies, and musical entertainment.
4. Accompanying patients to non-clinical areas like the chapel, shop, or restaurant/café with family/patient consent, ensuring the patient is independently mobile and fit to leave the ward.
5. Helping patients locate facilities and referring any concerns about their clinical care to nursing staff.
6. Assisting with mealtimes, including helping patients eat, handing out and collecting trays, and assisting with menu cards.
7. Checking and completing food/fluid charts as required.
8. Providing and refilling drinks and water jugs.
Personal Specification
* Must be 18 or over.
* This is a non-clinical role; volunteers will not shadow or assist staff in clinical tasks.
* Willingness to undertake necessary training.
* Good communication skills, patience, and a caring, empathetic manner.
* Reliability, dependability, flexibility, and understanding of confidentiality.
* Positive outlook and enthusiasm.
Additional Requirements
* Successful placement requires Disclosure Scotland PVG, occupational health clearance, and two character references.
* Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
* Volunteers should not undertake duties outside this role without approval, nor manual handling tasks without proper training.
* Volunteers may offer emotional support but must not give medical advice.
* Volunteers complement, not replace, paid staff roles.
* Must sign and return the Volunteer Agreement before starting.
* Training includes induction, role-specific training, and ongoing education.
* Volunteer hours are typically during breakfast (8am-9:30am), lunch (12pm-2pm), and evening (5pm-7pm). Consistent weekly commitment is preferred.
