Offer description

School of Architecture, Technology and Engineering

Location: Brighton - Moulsecoomb Salary: £36,636 to £39,906 pro rata Fixed Term End Date: 30/04/2027 Closing Date: Sunday 12 April 2026 Reference: TE4069-26-057

The University of Brighton is leading the charge in low‑carbon technologies, and we are looking for a dynamic Research Officer to join our innovative team. This is your chance to make a real impact on the future of low‑carbon agriculture.

Agriculture plays a crucial role in feeding, but it is also a major source of environmental challenges, particularly greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). The University of Brighton is leading an existing project developing a GHG emission calculator for agricultural products based on dynamic and live 5G data. This will be used for growers to report emissions and identify hotspots for improvement.

Role

In your new role you will collaborate and support in ground‑breaking research on a dynamic carbon calculator for agriculture. Your role will involve developing a complex online dashboard to automate emissions reporting. To be successful in this role, you should have:

* A degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science or a closely related data‑intensive field
* Sufficient, up‑to‑date breadth or depth of specialist knowledge in the discipline.
* Some research experience with research methods and techniques in software development
* Competent IT skills in data science software, Python or MATLAB
* Proficiency in software development frameworks such as Django and React

Proven ability to generate clear and comprehensive technical documentation (e.g., architectural reports, system specifications) as well as accessible non‑technical reports for academic, industry, and stakeholder audiences.

For full details of this role, and the skills and experience required, please see the attached job description and person specification.

Please note, this role is 0.5 full‑time equivalent and is fixed‑term until 30 April 2027. We do welcome applications from people seeking job‑sharing opportunities.

If you are ready to contribute to transformative research and drive sustainability, in a supportive and inclusive environment - apply now.

We embrace equality and diversity in our working, learning, research and teaching environment and are committed to maintaining a supportive and inclusive community. We particularly encourage applicants from Minority Ethnic backgrounds because the University is under‑represented by Minority Ethnic staff.

For the vast majority of our roles we operate an agile working system, with time split between working on campus and at the employee's home. It is the University's expectation that home working will take place within the UK.
