Design Engineer – Mould Tool Location: Whitstable, Kent A well-established manufacturing business in Whitstable is looking to recruit a Design Engineer supporting Mould Tool Designs for both production and new product introduction activities. This role sits within the Design Engineering function and plays a key part in resolving moulding-related production issues, improving manufacturability, and supporting NPI projects through strong Design for Moulding (DFM) and DFMEA practices. It’s a technically focused position suited to a design engineer with a strong moulded component background who enjoys working close to production as well as contributing to new tooling and product development. The Design Engineer – Mould Tool Design role As Design Engineer – Mould Tool Design, you’ll support the moulding and manufacturing teams by investigating production issues, identifying root causes and implementing robust component or tooling design improvements. Key responsibilities Design & manufacturing support Contribute to the moulding engineering designs, supporting both production and development activities. Investigate production stops, quality concerns and process issues, implementing effective design or tooling corrective actions. Analyse existing moulding processes and tooling to identify opportunities for improvement. Define, perform and document trials, ensuring improvements are validated and sustained in production. Design for moulding & NPI Provide technical input into NPI and APQP activities, supporting DFM / DFMEA for moulded components and tooling. Support validation, documentation and release of new mould tools and processes into production. Optimise component and tooling designs using simulation tools such as Moldex 3D. Advise on alternative materials where existing materials become obsolete or difficult to source. C AD & technical documentation Design, verify and maintain detailed 3D models, drawings and specifications for moulded components and tooling using CAD software (currently Creo). Produce manufacturing-ready drawings in line with relevant standards (e.g. BS8888). Coordinate drawing control activities and ensure documentation is accurate and up to date. What we’re looking for BEng (or higher) qualification in Engineering or a relevant Design discipline. Experience in a Design Engineering role within a manufacturing environment Strong experience designing moulded components and tooling. Proficient with Creo or similar 3D CAD and PLM systems. Experience using simulation tools such as Moldex 3D to optimise mould and component designs. Strong understanding of Design for Manufacture, Design for Assembly and Design for Moulding in volume production. Experience working within NPI and production readiness gate review processes. Good working knowledge of GD&T and creation of detailed manufacturing drawings. Understanding of risk-based design processes including DFMEA and DFM/A.
