Job overview

We are looking for a post holder who will play a key supervisory role within the Entrance Building, supporting the safe, secure, and efficient operation of security services across the hospital site. Working as part of the Entrance Building supervision team, the post holder will assist in the deployment and day-to-day supervision of security operations staff, ensuring that access and egress for authorised personnel, patients, visitors, and vehicles is managed in full accordance with Trust security policies and procedures.

The role involves providing operational support to the Entrance Building Manager and Entrance Building Support Staff, with responsibility for the effective monitoring, testing, and response to all security systems covering the hospital site. This includes ensuring alarms are appropriately managed, system tests are completed and recorded, and that all shift activity, incidents, and fault reports are accurately documented. The post holder will also oversee the safe control of patient and vehicle movements, ensuring all patients are accounted for at all times.

The post holder will provide supervision and support to control room operations throughout each shift and will be required to make autonomous operational decisions when working out of hours or in the absence of the Entrance Building Manager. This may include acting up for short periods to ensure continuity of service during annual leave or short-notice sickness.

As part of their supervisory responsibilities, the post holder will contribute to staff training, development, and competency assessment across key operational areas, including staff search and de-registration, reception and Leave of Absence (LOA) processes, vehicle lock procedures, and control room functions. The role also includes delivering secondary induction training, mentoring staff through regular one-to-one supervision, and supporting the Personal Development Review (PDR) process.

The post holder will assist the management team with security audits, incident reporting, security intelligence submissions, and the production of departmental reports and key performance indicators. They will also support recruitment, interview, and assessment activities for Entrance Building Support Staff.

In addition, the role requires maintaining high standards of cleanliness within operational areas and equipment to reduce infection risk, ensuring the department remains a safe and effective training environment. The post holder must maintain occupational competency, be fully conversant with relevant Trust policies, and be willing to undertake operational duties when required to cover staffing shortfalls.

Throughout all aspects of the role, the post holder will represent Entrance Building services in line with Trust values, promoting equality, diversity, dignity, and respect in all interactions.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will support the deployment and supervision of security operations staff within the Entrance Building, ensuring the safe and secure access and egress of authorised personnel, patients, visitors, and vehicles in accordance with Trust policies and procedures.

They will assist the Entrance Building Manager and Support Staff in the effective operation, monitoring, testing, and response to all security systems across the hospital site, ensuring alarms and system activations are managed appropriately and in line with agreed procedures.

The post holder will ensure that routine system testing, fault reporting, incident recording, and shift logs are completed accurately and maintained in accordance with Trust requirements.

They will provide supervision and operational support to control room functions throughout shifts, ensuring compliance with established procedures and effective incident management at all times.

The role includes monitoring and controlling patient and vehicle movements, ensuring that all patients are accounted for and that movements are recorded and communicated to relevant stakeholders.

The post holder will exercise a level of operational autonomy during out-of-hours periods and will act up in the absence of the Entrance Building Manager to ensure continuity of service. They will contribute to staff training, competency assessment, and ongoing development across reception, Leave of Absence (LOA), staff search, vehicle lock, and control room operations. Responsibilities also include delivering secondary induction training, providing mentoring through regular one-to-one supervision, and supporting the Personal Development Review (PDR) process.

In addition, the post holder will ensure staffing resources are deployed effectively, escalating risks, concerns, or shortfalls to the appropriate line manager as required. They will complete incident and security intelligence reports in accordance with Trust policy and assist with audits, departmental reporting, recruitment, and performance monitoring activities.

The role also requires maintaining high standards of cleanliness within operational areas and equipment in line with infection prevention and control requirements.

Essential criteria

1. Educated to Secondary school level or above.
2. Experience of working a high secure environment
3. Evidence of attending formal security & supervisory training courses.

Desirable criteria

4. Diploma in risk & security and/or management or evidence of relevant leadership experience.
5. Apprenticeship in Leadership

Experience

Essential criteria

6. Occupationally competent of all security procedures within the Entrance Building team.
7. Demonstrate a leadership and role model style that is consistent with organisational culture and expectations.

Desirable criteria

8. Previous experience in the high security setting.
9. Experience of delivering training in a high secure service

Knowledge

Essential criteria

10. Working knowledge of the High Security Psychiatric Services (Arrangements for Safety & Security) Directions 2019
11. Working knowledge of the National Clinical Security Framework
12. High standard of written and verbal communication skills

Desirable criteria

13. To have a working knowledge of Control Room procedures and systems, including radio network systems, CCTV, Data Protection Act in so far as it applies to Entrance Building operations.
