The post holder will share with the other consultants the responsibility for the continuity of care of patients treated at The Christie. The successful candidate will be expected to work with local managers and professional colleagues in the efficient running of services and will share administrative duties with consultant colleagues. Subject to the provisions of the Terms and Conditions of Service, the successful candidate is expected to follow division’s agreed policies and procedures, drawn up in consultation with health care professionals on clinical matters, and to follow the standing orders and financial instructions of The Christie NHS Foundation Trust.
The Department of Anaesthesia & Critical Care is dynamic and expanding, offering professional development opportunities. Applicants with a specialist interest in Critical Care are encouraged, with job plans developed accordingly. The department operates a rolling rota reviewed annually in line with Trust policy and sits within the Directorate of Anaesthesia, Theatres & Surgery (ATS), part of the Division of Clinical Support & Specialist Surgery (CSSS), alongside Radiology, Laboratory and Support Services.
The role comprises a 10 PA job plan, with 7.5 Programmed Activities (PA) for Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and 2.5 for Supporting Programmed Activities (SPA), agreed on appointment with the Clinical Director for Anaesthesia and Critical Care and the Directorate Operations Manager. Individual needs and specialist interests are supported while ensuring service requirements are met.

We provide radiotherapy through one of the largest radiotherapy departments in the world; chemotherapy on site and through 14 other hospitals; highly specialist surgery for complex and rare cancer; and a wide range of support and diagnostic services. We are also an international leader in research, with world first breakthroughs for over 100 years. We run one of the largest early clinical trial units in Europe with over 300 trials every year. Cancer research in Manchester, most of which is undertaken on the Christie site, has been officially ranked the best in the UK.
Job Planning
The job plan outlines the requirements of the post and may be altered by joint agreement with the Divisional Clinical Director and Service Manager and in response to service needs. Job Plans are prospectively agreed subject to an annual individual job plan review (May – September). It is expected that the initial Job Plan discussion will take place within the first six months of employment at the Trust and then be aligned to the Trusts annual Job Planning review cycle. The annual review will examine all aspects of the job plan (including any educational and supervision components) and will also include an assessment of professional development with defined goals for the future. For more information refer to the Terms and Conditions section of this Job Description and also the Trust’s Job Planning Policy.
Mandatory Training
To ensure you maintain safe practice and understand Trust requirements, you must ensure your essential/mandatory training modules are maintained at all times using allocated core SPA time to complete them.
On-call commitments
This role requires participation in an on-call commitment for the oncological critical care. This is currently a 1:8 rota, and attracts a 2.2 PA allocation and 5% on-call supplement. There is a separate theatre on-call rota for emergency surgery.
Health and Wellbeing
The Trust provides supplementary health and wellbeing support for all staff under the umbrella title of ‘Looking After You’. This includes an Employee Assistance Programme that provides counselling and other support; an annual programme of wellbeing and recognition events; access to The Christie Library, the Spiritual Care Team, Schwartz Rounds and staff networks; and services and initiatives that respond to emerging needs, concerns and trends.
All new consultants are also enrolled onto a Leadership and Development programme to help support their transition to working as a consultant within the trust. Within the department, new consultants also undergo a period of supernumerary shadowing prior to undergoing solo work in theatres and critical care. There is also regular access to a clinical support anaesthetist, whose responsibility includes providing support for clinical decision making for elective and emergency situations, as well as ensuring consultants get regular breaks in theatres. As a small, friendly and approachable department, informal peer support is also available and encouraged, both in and outside of normal working hours. We also have a social and wellbeing lead, who regularly organises social events throughout the calendar year.
