Research Engineer - (12 Month Fixed Term Contract)
Northeast England (Hybrid after probation)
£32,000 - £42,000 + 32 Days Holiday + Healthcare Plan + Training + Pension
An exciting opportunity is available for an engineer to join a specialist team working on the development of next-generation infrared gas sensing technology.
The role involves hands-on development and refinement of components used in optical sensing systems. You'll take responsibility for building and testing prototypes, evaluating performance, and contributing to design improvements that support future manufacturing. You'll be joining a small, focused team working on a technically challenging and impactful project within a regulated environment.
An ideal person would have strong experimental skills, basic electronics knowledge, and familiarity with digital communication protocols such as serial comms. Practical experience with adhesives, vacuum systems, and optical sensor design would be highly beneficial. Being eligible for SC clearance is a must for this position.
This is a rare opportunity to work at the forefront of gas sensor innovation, contributing to research that supports real-world applications in challenging and safety-critical environments.
This fixed-term position is ideal for someone with a background in applied science, such as material science or physics or electronics who enjoys hands-on prototyping and practical experimentation. Skilled in either Python/Matlab/Pandas or Numpy is a must have for data analysis.

The Person:

* Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
