SEMH Learning Support Assistant – Teesside
Milk Education are recruiting for a dedicated, compassionate and resilient SEMH Learning Support Assistant to join a specialist SEMH school in Teesside, supporting children and young people aged 2–19. This role is suitable for experienced support staff or individuals looking to develop their career within SEMH and alternative provision.
You will be joining a highly supportive and inclusive school that places relationships, emotional wellbeing and positive behaviour at the centre of its approach. The school provides a structured and nurturing environment, utilising tailored strategies to support pupils with social, emotional, and mental health needs.

Learning Support Assistant Roles & Responsibilities:
1. Provide 1:1 and small group support for pupils with SEMH needs across a range of ages.
2. Support pupils to regulate emotions and manage behaviour using trauma-informed and restorative approaches.
3. Assist the class teacher in delivering engaging, differentiated lessons.
4. Help create a calm, safe and structured learning environment.
5. Implement behaviour support plans, risk assessments and individual education plans.
6. Build strong, trusting relationships with pupils to support engagement and progress.
7. Work collaboratively with teachers, pastoral staff, parents/carers and external professionals.
Learning Support Assistant Must-Haves:
8. Experience working with children or young people with SEMH or challenging behaviour (school or care setting)
9. Experience working with vulnerable adults (not essential)
10. A calm, patient and resilient approach
11. Knowledge of effective behaviour management and de-escalation strategies
12. Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
13. Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team
14. A genuine passion for supporting pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs
